Kashmir super 30 (ii) empowers engineering aspirants from the valley

Srinagar, September 19 (Scoop News)- Kashmir valley is spread over a large geographical footprint with relatively few urban centres. Access to quality higher education in the valley has been severely hampered due to non-availability of quality institutes with qualified staff both in rural and urban areas. Consequently, the students of the valley are severely at a disadvantage while competing at the national level especially in cutting edge competitive examinations for reputed institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Afore stated deficit gets accentuated further in the case of children from the lower socio-economic strata of the valley.

To alleviate the problems being faced by the aspiring youth and provide a platform for the underprivileged yet talented students of the valley, Chinar Corps with support from Centre for Social Responsibility and Leadership (CSRL), a Delhi based NGO, conceptualized Project Kashmir Super 30 in 2013 to set up a free, residential, coaching center to the eligible and aspiring students of the valley for the preparation of IIT/JEE exams at Tattoo Ground in Srinagar every year for a period of 11 months i.e. from May to Apr. The Project initially commenced with 23 students in 2013 and till now has given guidance to a total of 252 students, out of which 165 students have been qualified in JEE in last seven years.

Army and CSRL with a CSR partner (A Private/ Public company sponsoring the project for the subject year) takes onus for handling and running the project including provision of proficient faculties for smooth conduct of the project. Army provides the entire logistic support including the infrastructure facilities which includes classrooms, computer laboratories, study room, dormitory, dining hall etc along with a secure environment conducive for studies. Dagger Artillery Brigade under the aegis of Dagger Division has been running this project successfully for the last six years. The budgetary support for Kashmir Super 30 is provided by Public/ Private Companies under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives through CSRL. Presently the financial support for the project is being provided by Petronet LNG Limited (PLL).

Students of CBSE and State Board of districts of Kashmir valley and Ladakh region who are appearing for their 12th Board exams of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) as Primary subjects, and Annual family income less than 2.5 lakhs are eligible to enrol in Kashmir Super 30. Representatives of Kashmir Super 30 carry out a School to School Reach Programme (SSRP) in all major districts of the valley, Kargil and Dras to create awareness about the project among aspiring students who dream of joining premier engineering institutes in the country. The eligible candidates undergo an entrance test to assess their acumen in the core subjects of PCM along with their aptitude. The shortlisted students from the entrance test are then interviewed at the Institute in Srinagar and the final enrolment is based on the merit of the students. Selected male students are trained at Kashmir Super 30 Center in Srinagar and girl students at CSRL Center in Noida.
Project Kashmir Super 30 has been providing brilliant girl students from underprivileged background an ideal platform to realize their dreams to study in various premier institutions. The eligibility criteria and the selection process for the programme remains the same. Till date a total of 10 girl students of Kashmir valley have benefitted from the project, while presently four girl students are undergoing training at CSRL Center in Noida.
The students of Kashmir Super 30 with their sheer hard work and dedication nurtured by the brilliant faculties under the secure environment provided by the Army have achieved tremendous success in all the batches since its inception in 2013-14. The lives of more than 200 students have been enriched by this initiative in the last six years. Senior Army Officers regularly interact with the students to motivate them to excel further in their educational endeavours and widen their horizons.

This year a total of 47 students were enrolled in the project, out of which 28 students have qualified IIT JEE (Mains). Master Suhail Majeed of Bandipore has scored an astounding 91.75 percentile.
