Political parties huddle up to decide about prospective candidates for upcoming five phase parliamentary elections in JK



Jammu, March 19, (Scoop News)-After issuing the notification for elections in two Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir which are going in polls in the first phase on April 11, the political parties are huddled up in finalizing their candidates.

The elections for two phases are to be held in quick succession on April 11 and April 18. Jammu- Poonch and Baramulla parliamentary seats will go to polls in the first phase on April 11 and Udhampur- Doda and Srinagar- Badgam constituencies will go to polls in the secod phase on April 18.

Jammu and Kashmir will have a five phase polling process.

National Conference Parliamentary Board (NCPB) on Monday decided to contest all six seats in the state without entering into any alliance with any other political group. However, the NCPB members left the final decision up to party president, Dr Farooq Abdullah.

Incidentally, the NC has declared the candidature of Dr Farooq Abdullah and Mohammed Akbar Lone from Srinagar and Baramulla parliamentary for the upcoming polls.

After holding deliberations with her party cadre and seek their suggestions on the candidature for two Jammu seats on Tuessday in Jammu, the winter capital, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Mehbooba Mufti, would be deciding about two parliamentary constituencies Jamm- Poonch and Udhampur- Doda.

The party will be making formal announcement on March 20 of all the contesting candidates, said a party source. Incidentally, PDP had already declared former employees leader, Abdul Qayoom Wani, its candidate for the Baramulla parliamentary seat.

The other probable PDP candidates include Zulfikar Chowdhary, Surrinder Chowdhary, Ghulam Nabi Lone, Nazir Ahmed Khan, Abdul Rehman Veeri and Dr Mehboob Beg. The party, however, claimed that it was not in talks with the Congress party for any kind of alliance for upcoming parliamentary elections.

The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief, GA Mir, said the party would like to contest four parliamentary seats in the state and can leave only two seats for NC in case of any pre poll alliance with it.

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) is likely to release its first list of candidates on Tuesday.

Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) too has declared its candidates for two seats in the Valley and included Jehangir Ahmed Khan and Abdul Rashid Ganie from Baramulla and Srinagar constituencies respectively.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced provision for printing the photographs of contesting candidates to avoid any confusion which may arise when candidates with similar names and contest from the same constituency.

The photograph will be printed on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot units as well on postal ballot papers, ECI officials said adding that the candidates are required to submit to the returning officer, their recent photograph as per the specifications laid down by the Commission.

It may be recalled that in 2014 the parliamentary elections were held across nine phases beginning April 7 and ending May 9. Results were declared on May 16.

The contestants in fray were 8,251 with an average of 15 in each constituency, though deposits got forfeited for 7,000 contestants.

A total of 55 crore voters (66. 3 percent) exercised their right of franchise where there were nearly six million NOTA votes. A total of 668 women candidates contested, out of which 62 won....
