Hartals by separatists have ruined Kashmir economically, educationally

Farooq Ahmad

History is witness that whenever any dispute complemented by violence is found, it’s the common man who has to pay its cost. The never ending hartal (strike) politics of Kashmiri separatists does not only result in the loss of human lives, but also makes the society economically weak.
Over the last 30- years, protracted cycles of unrest, terrorism, proxy war by Pakistan and endless strikes by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Co have propelled the decline of sustainable development in Kashmir. In Hartals have been made a much clichéd response to each situation irrespective of the contemplation of the magnitude of the damage it brings in the social and economic life of the people of Kashmir.

After losing the ground completely, these so-called Hurriyat leaders in the last two and half years have been imposing strikes on poor people of Kashmir and they make it sure people abstain from work by unleashing stone-pelters on them. Despite mounting pressure on the separatists that shutdowns have achieved nothing in 3o-years, but only destruction, these Pakistani stooges are giving no respite to people.

On February 9 and February 11, they forced people to abstain from work to commemorate the death anniversaries of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat – two terrorists who were hanged for their role in Parliament attack case and murders respectively -- after a long drawn legal process. And now just a day after, Geelani and Co has again called for two-days strike on Wednesday and Thursday. And for decades now separatists ensure that nobody works on Fridays.

The economy of Kashmir which is dependent on tourism has hit rock bottom and if the situation continued be like this the tourism industry in Kashmir would be ruined beyond retrieval. Hartals have ruined economy, schools, colleges and universities remain frequently shut, but separatist leaders ensure that their children and grand-children study in best educational institutions in rest of the country and abroad.
There is no sector that has not affected in Kashmir due to the strikes. In Jammu and Kashmir, as many as 14000 techies were employed by various IT companies but majority of them lost their jobs after 2016 strike calendar by separatists. Thousands of people in tourism industry, handicrafts, horticulture and various other companies have also lost their jobs due to strikes.

People have been expressing a strong resentment on social media against the separatists for calling meaningless shutdowns. They are right in saying that Hurriyat leaders are working only for their selfish ends at the cost of blood of innocent youth. Hartal has become a disease in Kashmir which need be cured once for all. Somebody sneezes somewhere and separatists force people to shut all normal activities. Hartals have not only ruined Kashmiris economy but they have a very negative impact on the academics of Kashmir. Better is to shun this hartal strategy so that Kashmir is not harmed anymore.
