Avalanche took 5 precious lives, 5 still missing at Khardong- la road


Leh ,January 18 (Scoop News)-In a tragic avalanche accident that took place today morning on Khardong-La road (near India Gate), 5 labours were dead and 5 still missing when reports last came in. It was conformed that two trippers and one Scorpio with 10 labours were engaged by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. to bring snow for AUH Helicopter stationed at Leh which was supposed to make trail land on the snow. The avalanche caused when the labours excavated accumulated snow along the base of road which triggered avalanche and one tipper along with labours came into strong avalanche.

As soon as Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Leh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal received the information in the morning, he mobilized the SDRF, Army, Airforce and BRO teams and rushed to the accident site immediately and personally supervised the rescue operation. The CEC JTN expressed deep condolence and grief over the loss of lives. He said that Hill Council Leh will try its best to give relief and ex-gratia to the families of affected people.

In the afternoon, CEC JTN called an emergency meeting of Army, Airforce, BRO, Police and Medical dept officers at Council Secretariat Leh and urged them to extend their support on war footing today to rescue untraced labours. He highly appreciated SDRF, Army, Airforce, BRO teams and volunteers for their prompt action said that he already communicated NDMA to provide key equipments which are not available with SDRF team. To avoid such untoward accidents in future, CEC directed police to keep a strict vigil in implementing road safety measures and traffic regulations to avoid such accident in future and directed police to launch an FIR to book the culprits stressing that no culprit should flee from the hands of law. CEC JTN directed DC/CEO LAHDC, Leh to form a SIT team for an impartial investigation.

Realizing the situation, CEC JTN also talked to Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir on phone and updated them about the rescue operations. He said that he is also in touch NDMA to assist rescue team if required.
