Leh,January 17 (Scoop News)-The Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Leh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal today in a letter to K. Vijay Kumar, Advisor to Governor Jammu & Kashmir demanded for an establishment of Ice Hockey Academy at Leh in line with State Football Academy and recognition of Ice Hockey by Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Government of India.
CEC JTN said that Ice Hockey is played in abundance in Ladakh region during the winters and Ladakh region is the sole contributor for Indian Ice Hockey team for both men and women categories. Ice hockey is still played here in natural ponds with outmost enthusiasm and this sport is gaining popularity all over India and Ladakhi players have been representing India at world stage for last many years.
The letter reads that the game of Ice Hockey is very popular in cold climate countries all over the world which needs to be managed professionally in J&K State. But ironically, Ice Hockey not being recognized sports, the players have to represent India through crowd funding and expenses of their own.
CEC JTN said that constitution of a professional Ice Hockey Academy in Leh and recognition of Ice Hockey game would be the ideal step for further propagation of the sports as well as welfare of the sports person associated with it and requested Advisor Kumar to direct State Sports Council to take required necessary action for establishment of Ice Hockey Academy at Leh and recommendation for the recognition of Ice Hockey as a sport to Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Government of India.
