| DCC- Leh celebrates 85th birthday of P Namgyal | | enumerates his contributions and achievements. |
Leh(Ladakh), December 16, (Scoop News)-In a heart warming meeting held on Saturday to celebrate the 85th birthday of veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister, P Namgyal, the District Congress Committee (DCC)- Leh enumerated and lauded the contributions and achievements of its leader.
The poignant meeting was held under the stewardship of DCC president, Tsering Namgyal and those who participated in the event included by former lawmakers, Narbo Gyaltsan, Deldan Namgyal and former Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)- Leh, Rigzin Spalbar besides several other prominent leaders.
On the occasion, the speakers highlighted the achievements of the seasoned leader and described him as a backbone of the Congress party in the region since he joined the party in 1969. They said P Namgyal played an important role in consolidating and strengthen the party in the region.
They recalled how zealously he worked for the growth and welfare of the people when he was a minister in the Central Government and executed some of the major developmental projects in the region. He also struggled for grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to entire Ladakh region, they said adding that P Namgyal contributions have been enormous and he acted as a catapult. His personal intervention in helped in overcoming the hurdles at inter-ministerial levels and Registrar General of Census.
As an undisputed leader, P Namgyal succeeded in persuading and convincing his leader, the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, to hold negotiations with agitating members of Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) in 1989.and made him to approve inter-alia the demand for a local hill development council for governance in the region, they pointed out.
Due to his continuous struggle, the central Government announced tax exemption in 1989 and it is considered as an admirable contribution for the people of the region, they speakers recalled and said that he prevailed upon party high command and succeeded in creating a separate assembly segment for Nubra valley.
His plethora of achievements include establishing of All India Radio station in Leh, connecting Delhi with Leh by Indian Airlines, Namgyal also got a satellite communication centre, set up in the region , the Congress leaders recalled.
They said as a Union Petroleum Minister he got an oil depot of Indian Oil Company (IOC), Gas bottling plant and a petrol pump established in the region.
Over a hundred well wishers including former DCC chief, Tsering Samphal, had called on the seasoned leader, P Namgyal, on Saturday at his residence in New Delhi to extend their birthday greetings personally to him.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders, Nawang Rigzin Jora, Ghulam Raza, Dr Namgyal Gangior, Mohammed Shafi Lassu, Sonam Dorjey Sercho, Stobdan Goba, Ghulam Abbas and several others also conveyed their birthday greetings to the veteran leader and lauded his contributions in building a modern Ladakh.
