Anantnag and Srinagar districts register highest incidents of disappearance till June end

Srinagar, September 11, (Scoop News)-As many as 320 girls have gone missing or have slipped away from various parts of the valley till ending June this year, confirms a report compiled by the police.
The highest incidents of run away cases were registered in Anantnag district with 46 cases followed by 37 cases of disappearance in Srinagar district, the report said adding that nearly 80 percent these cases have been solved during the same period.
The report further said of 170 girls who went missing during first six months of the year 120 were recovered and handed over to their parents. From Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, Kulgam, Srinagar, Pulwama, Ganderbal, Badagam, Shopian and Sopore 10, 2, 0, 23, 3, 19, 9, 8, 0 and 23 girls respectively who left in anger after disapproving fixing of their marriage by parents during the same period.
Incidentally, girls who return back to their homes of their own are not reported to the police by their families and the ratio between the incidents of missing cases is apparently higher than the number of recoveries made till end of June.
The report indicates that the girls who run off against the wishes of their parents are reported as ‘missing’ by them to avoid ‘social stigma’.
