Dalia Lama insists for making 21st century a ‘century of peace and dialogue’
present generation belongs to youth and they are ‘our hope and strength’

Leh/ Jammu, March 19, (Scoop News)-Tibetan spiritual guru and Nobel Prize winner for Peace, Dalai Lama exhorted that dialogue and not the violence was the only way to determine all kinds of contentious issues.

“Violence begets violence and it (violence) could lead to an endless chain of backlash,” he said and adding that “once you resort to violence, there will be counter violence and unpredictable consequences.”

The spiritual leader said that it was indispensable to make 21st century as a century of peace, a century of dialogue” and retrieve basic virtue of human nature, a kindness to make the world a better place to live unlike earlier century which watched immense bloodshed.

He said the scientists had proved that the basic human nature was more compassionate. “Young children, six months, four months old, smile at each other. Compassion comes to a child from his mother. Even mischief mongers have basically the same compassion. Our own experiences show that constant anger and fear affect our immune system. It is the duty of our educational system to further that basic character of compassion so that the world has hope.”

People must make an attempt to make 21st century as a century of peace and dialogue not through prayers but actions by youth who need to contribute through determination and will power, he said.

“This can be attained by the youth, the future of the world and this case the future of India. I used to make a sort of distinction between the generations of 20th and 21st centuries. 21st generation belongs to youth and they are our hope and strength,” the spiritual guru said,

Nobel Peace prize winner was in Jammu to deliver a lecture at the maiden convocation of the Central University of Jammu (CUJ). Surprisingly, the event was marked by conspicuous absence of top functionaries of the state after Central Government had reportedly circulated a note to all officials to keep away from the functions attended by Dalai Lama.

The spiritual leader insisted for making 21st century a ‘Century of Peace’ and asserted that this could be possible by going back to ancient Indian thought and knowledge with ‘Ahimsa’ no violence and compassion and logical reasoning bordering skepticism as its cornerstones.

“India needs to go back to its roots, amalgamating modern education with its ancient knowledge based on non violence, compassion and dialogue to lead the world to find solution to all of its problems off shoot of violence, hatred and anger and negative emotions,” the Nobel laureate said.

“21st century witnessed too much violence, war so it seemed the preceding century belonged to army people. Question arises- whether immense violence, nuclear weapons really brought better world. According to some historians, 200 million people were killed because of violence including civil war. No matter how sincere motivation is, the right course is not use military to find a solution. If you choose military forces, it will lead to unpredictable consequences. Thus we must make the 21st century a century of peace, not through the prayers but through action. Thus it should be a century of dialogue . In , order to face differences, if you use violence there will be counter violence. There will be chain reactions,” the Tibetan spiritual guru said.

In an attempt to prove his point, Dalai Lama referred to Iraq war, which according to the spiritual guru, proved to be a deadly move by the then US President, George Bush, eliciting chain reactions.” The goal of President Bush, who at the personal level was a very nice human being, was to bring democracy in Iraq yet his method of military options proved to be counterproductive,”

Nobel laureate indicated that wrong policy was the reason behind the rise of so called terrorists and increase of hatred against America. He said violence begets violence and the cycle continues unabated. “The only way to create peace is, we must develop will power, no matter how complex the situation is, to try to resolve issues through dialogue,” the spiritual guru said.

Dalai Lama said that India’s thousands of years of spiritual and secular values include the respect for believers of different faiths but also for non believers. In this connection he made a special reference to Jammu and Kashmir. The spiritual guru said, “Jammu and Kashmir is a state in which Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians live in complete harmony. This state presents the true harmony of India.”

Articulating fear, he said the race for military power by big powers even smaller countries like North Korea could make the present century a century of disaster.

“If this situation goes on, I fear the present century could be the century of disaster,” the spiritual guru said adding “I have strong criticism of against our so called modern education system which is focused on material values. In this 8th century, a Tibetan emperor invited a scholar from Nalanda which was so highly developed in spiritual values. Nalamda was not a monastery but a complete university where people studied logic. I have been having discussions with American and European scholars who completely agree that ancient Indian values are very relevant to present day world.”...
