National conference on fungal biology concludes in JU
collaborative approach with for research on fungal biology need of the hour
Jammu, November 18, (Scoop News)-The three day National Conference on Fungal Biology: Recent Trends and Future Prospects & 44th Annual Meeting of Mycological Society of India organized by the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, Jammu concluded here today.
On the occasion, Prof. T. N Lakhanpal, one of the renowned mycologists of the country and Prof Emeritus, was the chief guest while Prof. Keshav Sharma, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, Jammu was the Guest of Honour. Prof N S Atri Chief editor Kavaka Journal and Prof N. Raaman, Screatry, MSI represented the Mycological Society of India.
In his valedictory address, Prof Lakhanpal spoke at length about the present status of Indian Mycology and impressed upon the young researchers to take a lead from the experienced and accomplished senior mycologists to compete at the Global Platform. Mycology in India is at the crossroads and it is high time that the field of fungal diversity, systematic and evolution, fungal biotechnology and applications, plant-microbe interactions (mycorrhizae, PGPRs), medical mycology and mycotoxicology, fungal endophytes, fungal pathogenesis and disease management, technology and mushroom biology be given top priority to find some tangible solutions to alleviate the problems of food security and safety confronting mankind, said Prof Lakhanpal. He congratulated the University of Jammu and the Department of Botany for successful organization and fruitful outcome of the National Conference.
Lauding the efforts of the Department of Botany for organizing the meet in a well planned and effective manner, Prof Keshav Sharma in his remarks said that he always believed in the abilities and capabilities of the Department of Botany. Their organizational skills and meticulous planning of the event has made the University of Jammu proud. He also mentioned about the experience of dealing with mushrooms and MFPs as a marketing expert and quoted several historical events based on the utility of fungi especially mushrooms. On behalf of the University he conveyed his gratitude to the Mycological Society of India and all the senior mycologists and research delegates to have made this event academically enjoyable. Prof. N. Raaman, the dynamic Secretary of the MSI who has been instrumental in getting the MSI to the State of Jammu and Kashmir for the first ever time since its inception 44 years ago also thanked the Department of Botany, University of Jammu for holding this event in a very professional and impressive manner.
Giving details of the conference, Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Head Department of Botany and the Organizing Secretary of the conference informed that more than 180 delegates from all across the country including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Puducherry, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, New Delhi, besides J&K, etc participated in the conference. A total of 19 lead lectures by eminent mycologists, 54 oral presentations and 72 poster presentations were made during the Three- Day proceedings. Prof Sharma also thanked the Mycological Society of India for providing the opportunity to host the prestigious conference and 44th Annual meeting here in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
Several prospective recommendations that emerged from the conference were recorded and shall be circulated among the researchers and institutions for their practical implementations in various research endeavours.
Earlier, Prof Geeta Sumbali, Dean Life Sciences and Convenor of the Conference extended a warm-hearted welcome to the dignitaries, guests and the delegates. During the conference Prof. C. Manoharachary from Osmania University, Hyderabad was conferred on Lifetime achievement award. Prof. K. Natarajan Memorial Award was presented to Prof. Krishnendu Acharaya from University of Calcutta while Dr. V. Agnihothrudu memorial award and Dr. S.K. Shome Memorial Award were presented to Prof. M. Krishna Mohan from BISR, Jaipur and Dr. Dilip V. Hande from Amravati respectively.
The M J Thirumalachar award of MSI for best poster and oral presentation and six other awards for best oral and poster presentations were presented to the winners by the Dignitaries.
Dr. Sanjana Kaul, conducted the proceedings of the Valedictory session.
