BIO-prospecting of fungal resources mandatory for food and health security: say mycological experts


Jammu, November 17, (Scoop News)- On the second day of the National Conference on Fungal Biology: Recent Trends and Future Prospects being organized by the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, Jammu, technical sessions on various themes were held in the Seminar Hall and Library Hall of the Department of Botany. The first lead lecture was delivered by an eminent mycologist Prof. T. S. Suryanarayanan from Chennai who spoke on “Biomass to Biofuels: Possible Roles for Endophytes” followed by an interesting talk on “Nutritional and Nutraceutical Potential of the Wild Edible Agarics of North India” by Prof. Munruchi Kaur, Department of Botany, Punjabi University, Patiala

Another highlight of today’s proceedings was the Special Session on National Biological Act 2002 vis-a-vis fungal diversity that was supported by the National Biodiversity Authority, Chennai wherein expert speakers including Dr. Sanjay K. Singh (Pune), Dr. Sanjeeva Nayaka (Lucknow), Prof Manoj Dhar (Jammu) Sh. B.M. Sharma, IFS (Director, SFRI, Jammu) updated the audience about the present status of National Biodiversity Act 2002 as well as legal issues related to its implementation. While Dr. Sanjay Singh from Pune specifically feel the need to documentation Indian fungal diversity, Sh. B M Sharma, highlighted concerns about the unscrupulous trade and trafficking of some of the important fungal resources of Jammu and Kashmir State. All speakers unequivocally felt the need for all Universities and research institutions of the State to mandatorily focus on mushrooms and their bio-prospecting for which practicable collaborative approach with the established research centres of the country will be beneficial.
Later, in the afternoon Prof Krishnendu Acharya (Kolkata), Prof Munruchi Kour (Patiala), Prof K. K. Janardanan (Thrissur, Kerala), Dr. C.K. Pradeep (Thiruvananthpuram, Prof. M. B Shivanna (Shimoga, Karnataka), Prof. Arun Arya (Vadodara, Gujarat),), Prof V. Verma (SMVDU), Prof Jyoti Vakhlu (University of Jammu) also made their lead presentations. Besides, 70 poster presentations and 55 oral presentations were made by the researchers from different parts of the country. The technical sessions were chaired by senior scientists while the proceedings of the technical sessions were conducted under the supervision of Prof Namrata Sharma and Dr. Veenu Kaul.
