CUK, Shama foundation holds symposium on ‘Status of Women in Civilized Society’
Speakers call for immediate cessation of atrocities against women

Srinagar, November 16, (Scoop News)-Central University of Kashmir (CUK), Registrar, Prof. M. Afzal Zargar today said the atrocities on women folk were being committed from times immemorial and there was dire need to check these in contemporary times.
“In our history, many civilizations existed on this earth and the women have always been at the receiving end. They confronted several grave issues including domestic violence, dowry, sexual harassment, abortion of girl child, rapes, exploitation and other problems, which still persists and hence needs to be addressed and stopped forthwith,” Prof. M Afzal Zargar said during a symposium on ‘Status of Women in a Civilized Society’ organized by Department of Students Welfare (DSW) and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of CUK in collaboration with Shama Foundation at Nowgam-I academic block of the varsity here.
Dean, Students Welfare, Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Nikka, Chairperson ICC, Prof. Nighat Basu, Head, Department of Comparative Religion, Prof. Hameed Naseem Rafiabadi, HoD Oncology SKIMS and Trustee Shama Foundation, Dr. Aijaz Aziz, founder Shama Foundation, Mr. Gulam Nabi Shaida, Director Research, Prof. Abdul Gani, Honorary General Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, Ms. Roma Wani, SSM College Chairperson, Ms. Qazi Dilafroze, Trustee Shama Foundation, G.M Dug, Advocate and Founder Islamic Research Centre, Mr. A.R Hanjura, Deans of Schools, Heads and coordinators of Departments and students were also present on the occasion.
Chairperson ICC, Prof. Nighat Basu in her address, highlighted the issues confronting the women and their role in the society through a Power Point Presentation. She said that despite playing several crucial roles in her life, women suffers from innumerable problems.
Head, Department of Comparative Religion and trustee Shama Foundation, Prof. Hameed Naseem Rafiabadi said that in present circumstances dowry has become a greatest evil in the society. He said the government should take strict action against those demanding dowry.
Founder Shama Foundation, Dr. Gulam Nabi Shaida said the Shama foundation was established to help women confronting problems and provide them the succor. He said the Foundation has organised marriages of several girls and have also provided medicare facilities to the women belonging to the impoverished class.
Honorary General Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, Ms. Roma Wani said “we have to think out of box and have to know the real meaning of the word status, which we usually relate with the higher positions a women is getting in a society.” “The women should be given equal treatment in all sectors,” she added.
HOD Oncology SKIMS, Dr. Aijaz Aziz said the only way issues related to women could be tackled properly is to follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and Quran and Sunnah in letter and spirit.
SSM college chairperson, Ms. Qazi Dilafroze said the women are facing harassments at every place. She asked the women to speak up and make people aware about the problems confronting them.
Advocate and Founder Islamic Research Centre, Mr. A.R Hanjura stressed on the teachings of Islam about the rights of women. He said the women folk should fight for their rights in the light of the teachings of Islam.

Trustee Shama Foundation, G.M Dug enlisted the duties of men towards women in the light of Islamic teachings.
Earlier, Dean, Students Welfare, Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Nikka presented the welcome address and introduced the theme of the symposium. He said that life is impossible on earth without women and underscored the need of addressing their issues.
Later a debate competition was held on the theme in which Mr. Shoib Ahmad Wani of the Urdu department bagged the first position while as Syed Aneeqa of the Zoology Department and Mr. Iman Nazir of the Department of Religious Studies got the second and third positions respectively.
Assistant Professor Department of Urdu (CUK), Dr. Altaf Hussain, conducted the programme proceedings while as Associate Professor, Department of Education, Dr. Syed Zahoor Geelani proposed the vote of thanks.
