| 8th annual international CESI conference gets underway at Jammu University | | “Need to train our students to be good entrepreneurs”: Prof R D Sharma |
Jammu, November 16, (Scoop News)-The 8th annual international conference of the Comparative Education Society of India (CESI) got underway at the University of Jammu here today. The three day conference scheduled from 16-18 November 2017 on the theme “Criticality, Empathy and Welfare in Contemporary Educational Discourses” is witnessing congregation of over 200 delegates from all over the country and abroad including the eminent educations in India in the field of education. CESI is an Affiliate of the World Congress of Comparative Education Societies.
The conference was inaugurated by Prof. R.D Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu who was the Chief Guest at the inaugural function in the presence of Professor N.V. Varghese, Vice-Chancellor, National University for Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA), New Delhi who was the keynote speaker. Prof Saumen Chattopadhyay, President, CESI, Dr. S. Srinivasa Rao, Vice President, CESI, Dr Monica Gupta, general secretary CESI and Prof Renu Nanda, Head, Department of Education, University of Jammu and local organising secretary.
In his inaugural address, Prof R. D Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu said that it is a proud moment for the University of Jammu that we are hosting such an importance conference on a very important and relevant theme. He said was it was equally prestigious for the University of Jammu that such prominent Indian educationists have converged here for this three day international conference. He said in the changing global scenario, the role of educationists is very important and the preparation and education of teachers continues to be one of the most crucial aspects of any education system. He congratulated the Department of Education and various resource persons for participating in the conference and adding value to education.
“Education as the mother subject is feeding higher education so we must train our students to be competent enough to be good entrepreneurs by producing good stuff. As a Vice Chancellor he really felt happy and mesmerized with the work and effort,” said Prof Sharma hoping that the educationists will deliberate on all important themes and the delegates would be enriched by the deliberations. He said the key findings of the conference will go a long way in understanding all important issues in the field of comparative education.
Prof N.V Vergese, Vice Chancellor, National University for Educational Planning and Administration, New Delhi, in his keynote address, shared his visionary ideas about reshaping education in order to adapt to the present system and rapidly changing society.
“As education is a public good, it is question to many private providers to consider education as an investing sector,” he said adding we must prepare our young minds for 4th industrial revolution and shared his views as to how public funding can be reduced and private partners can be included. While throwing light on the main theme, he mentioned three important words that makes education valuable are critical thinking, critical self-reflection, and critical action. He emphasized on the academic integrity and social exclusion being the central area of research conducted in social sciences.
In his presidential address, Prof. Saumen Chattopadhyay, President, CESI said that CESI had organized international conferences in the south and north and looking forward for it in the west. He stressed upon three dimensions of economics of policy making viz setting the target for the teachers, institutions and increasing the role of private sectors such as PPP and other models, and lastly without values, educationist could not fulfil the educational needs. He talked about sustainable development, equal access to equal education, disciplinary perspective and diversity has to keep into consideration in policy making and participatory nature of education system.
Prof. Renu Nanda, in her welcome address, appreciated the efforts of various members and organizing committee of CESI in the smooth functioning of the inaugural session and hoped for the successful completion of the International conference. She also extended warm welcome to all the presenters. She also appreciated the work and collaboration of all the students, scholars, faculty and non-teaching staff of the department of education, Jammu University.
Earlier, Dr. Monica Gupta, General Secretary of CESI gave brief introduction about CESI. She informed that CESI came into existence in 1980 and the present conference is the 8th international conference of CESI. She appreciated the contribution of NUEPA and Azim Prem JI University for their support and collaboration with the CESI and she seeks help from these universities in the upcoming events of CESI.
Dr. Ritesh Khunyakari, Member, EC, CESI gave introduction to the theme of the Conference. He focussed on the three words of the conference theme: criticality, empathy and welfare and added that CESI serves as a platform to facilitate dialogue and in any theme proposed by the conference, policy makers as well as researcher must be consulted.
Prof. Mubarak Singh, Department of Education, University of Jammu presented a Vote of thanks and extended a heartfelt gratitude to all for sharing valuable thoughts and experiences.
Earlier, a plenary session was also held which was chaired by Prof. N V Varghese. Prof. Poonam Batra, Central Institute of Education, University of Delhi, New Delhi, Dr. Bimol Akoijam, Center for the Study of Social Systems, JNU, New Delhi, Dr. Arvind Mishra, Zakir Hussain Center for Educational Studies, JNU, New Delhi and Prof Nagaraju Gundemeda, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad were the speakers in the planery session.
About 33 parallel technical sessions would be held during three day conference on different broad sub-themes including “Education in the Era of Reforms: Examining Gendered Intersectionalities”; “Transforming Higher Education Scenarios”; “Media and Networks in Education”; “Regulation and Governance Issues in Higher Education”; “Teacher, Curriculum and Teacher Education”; “Student Activism, Movements and University Campuses”; “Margins of Education: Historical Studies”; “Education of Children in difficult Situations”; “Development Sector Initiatives in Education: Stories from the field”; “Educational Governance”; “Education and Marginal Groups”; “Curriculum, Pedagogy and Human Development”; “Literacy, Knowledge and Skills”, Education of Gifted Children in India, Issues in Higher Education, Education, Socio-economy, Diet and Social Jetlag: Impact on Health and Disease, Curriculum and Disciplinary Concerns, Critical Education, Maths Education, Education and Urban Transformations, Issues of Equity and Quality in Higher Education, Teacher Education, City and the Dis-privileged: Aspirations, Dilemmas and Memories, Issues in School Education, Inclusion, Diversity and Schooling, Information Technology and Education, Gender, Education and Access, Education, Disability and Inclusion, Elementary Education in Different Contexts, Pedagogical Issues in Teacher Education, Philosophical Dimensions of Empathy, Criticality and Welfare, Education, Inequality and Mobility, Leadership and Organizational Issues in Schools, Gender and Schooling, Teachers' Perceptions of Self, Issue of Language Learning in Schools, Contextual Issues in School Education, Futures in Education Technology, Pedagogical Significance of Stories and Children’s Writing , Psychological Processes, Educational Guidance and Counselling.
