Dalai Lama sanctifies new crematorium, unveils nine feet tall statue of lord Amitabha



Leh(Ladakh), July 20, (Scoop News)-Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama, who is on month long visit of the Himalayan region of Ladakh, unveiled the nine feet tall statue of lord Amitabha (Sangyas Opakimet) inside the premises of newly built Turthot Tharpaling (crematorium) near patrol pump.


People from different walks of life including state Cooperative Minister, Tsering Dorjay, Member of Parliament, Thupstan Chhewang, chief Executive Councilor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Dr Sonam Dawa besides councilors, district administration, monks and a large number of devotees were present.


Dalai Lama in his sermon underlined the need for developing good heart and mind to attain Nirvana peacefully without any fear. The spiritual leader said the performing of Choga (last funeral rites and ritual prayers) is filled with heavenly benediction to the departed soul.


“I am immensely impressed with the social work of Baba Amte method of burning the leprosy affected bodies and then planting a sapling over it,” he said, adding that “plantation is not only environmental friendly activity but the grown up trees would keep reminding one of his dear ones.”


Tibetan spiritual leader hoped the facility will serve the purpose and exhorted the devotees to live happily and amicably.


Built over an area of about four acres of land in the heart of the city, the crematorium has been initiated by Shenam Stanthong Tsogspa (SST) to enable the people from remote villages facing difficulties to cremate the bodies of their kin. The selfless effort by setting up of the facility by Shenam Stanthong Tsogspa has been widely appreciated by the people of Leh town.


Speaking to media persons, secretary SST, Sonam Dorjey, said they feel blessed to have His Holiness Dalai Lama himself ordaining the premises....
