Spiritual head Gyalwang Drukpa joins impressive list of ‘Wolfson Honorary Fellows’
Thiksey Rinpoche inaugurates ‘Sindhu Darshan Festival’, devotees take a dip in Holy Indus River




Leh(Ladakh), June 25, (Scoop News)-Spiritual head of Drukpa order of Buddhism, Gyalwang Drukpa, has accepted honorary fellowship from Wolfson College of Oxford in recognition of his tireless commitment to cultural preservation in the Himalayas.


“I am honoured to join the impressive list of Wolfson Honorary Fellows,” Gyalwang Drukpa said, adding “It has been great experience and privilege to work with the college over past five years as it has led the way in promoting all diverse cultures of the Himalayas and its history.”


Gyalwang visited the Tibetan and Himalayan Studies Centre at Wolfson in 2012. The Centre is unique Himalayan studies environment within the United Kingdom, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary research and a new platform for presenting Himalayan Culture to wider audience.


The Centre is dedicated to preserving and promoting Himalayan Cultural Heritage, to maintaining links between Oxford and Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist communities in Asia and to providing the best possible training for young generation of scholars.


In 2015 Wolfson College created ‘The Gyalwang Drukpa Scholarship’ in honour of the spiritual leader and the award further recoganises his importance in helping educate and protect Himalayan cultural history preserving it for future generations.


Gyalwang Drukpa is also involved in humanitarian, environmental issues besides fighting for women’s rights.


Meanwhile, Thiksey Rinpoche formally inaugurated ‘Sindhu Darshan Festival’ on the banks of River Indus by unfurling the National Flag followed by offering prayers with religious fervor.


Speaking on the occasion, Thiksey Rinpoche highlighted the importance of the holy River Indus. He appealed the organizers to launch a cleaning drive on the Indus in future so that its sanctity is preserved for years to come.


Over 1,500 pilgrims from different parts of the country were present to celebrate the occasion. Many of them took holy dip amid reciting of the prayers. On the occasion a team of ‘Gav Rakshak’ led by Fayaz Khan who will visit every nook and corner of the country for next 300 days with a pitcher of Indus water for generating awareness among the masses.


Thupstan Chhewang, a local lawmaker from Ladakh, urged the people of the country to support the patriotic Ladakhi demands of Bhoti language and opening of Kailash Mansarovar road.


Patron Sindhu darshan Utsav, Indresh Kumar, extended his full support to all demands highlighted by the local speakers. He appealed to the devotees to impress upon their respective lawmakers (Members of Parliament) to support the demands of the people of Ladakh in the Parliament.
