Lecture on “Status of Women in India and Women Studies Centers” organized at JU

Jammu, April 25, (Scoop News)- The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized a special lecture on “Status of Women in India and Women Studies Centers”. The speaker was Dr.Anjali Deshpande who apart from being an academician of repute, is currently Member of UGC Standing Committee on Women’s Studies and Member of Central Advisory Board of Education (Ministry of HRD).

Dr.Anjali Deshpande began her lecture with the manner the centre for women studies is perceived socially and the context in which they are located. In this context she pointed out how the popular perception about Women’s Studies tend to be exclusive in the sense that it is taken to be the exclusive domain of women both in terms of its functions and agenda of research. This she pointed out is a mistaken notion as women cannot be studied in isolation rather for the proper understanding and the insights of women, it is necessary to study them in relation to male. Having stated this, she went on to highlight the multiple roles that women play at different social and familial levels. In this context, She pointed out how the formative period of a child is decisively influenced by mother and therefore, it becomes important for us to ensure that the mothers are empowered, enlightened and aware of the realities around. She also pointed out that women by virtue of being central to the structure of family is more sensitive to the need of family and it is the responsibility of educated ones to ensure that they come out of several of the stereotypic image, superstitions and social customs which inhibits their proper growth. In this context, she also pointed out the need to deviate from the western models of feminism and look for perspective which emerges out of Indian context. She also pointed out the necessity to develop an extensive data bank on women by working in the field.

Prof. R.D.Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu presided over the function. In his presidential remarks, he spoke about how the situation is changing now and women are become more visible and well represented in different realms of society. In the realm of education women are doing well; in the University, we have increasing intake of girl’s students and even several of the educational administrative post are being handled by them with equal efficiency. He also argued how the gender centric division of works is being diluted. Now men have started stepping into the area of child rearing which was considered to be the domain of women. He, however, also pointed out the need for introducing more courses on women studies, and the need for generation more and more hard data on different aspects of women. He pointed out that it is through hard data that a constructive intervention is made in the policy planning.
