Beer turns up a ‘favourite’ thirst quencher of Kashmiri guzzlers ’
three districts consume 52 lakh bottles in three years, contributes sizeable amount to state’s revenue





Jammu, January 20, (Scoop News)-Beer has emerged the most favourite drink of the people in Kashmir with over 5.2 million bottles consumed between March 2014 and November 2016 in Srinagar- Badgam- Ganderbal districts of the Valley while a total of 40,729 bottles of other Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) were sold during the same period in the area.


Valley has registered a phenomenal increase in the sale and consumption of the beverages during past three successive fiscal years as Excise Department has recorded a sale of 1.15 million bottles of IMFL in 2014-15 and during the fiscal 2015-16, over 1.52 million bottles were sold. Similarly, till November ending during the current fiscal over half a million bottles of liquor had been sold in three districts.


Incidentally, Kashmir where terror outfits particularly ‘Allah Tigers’ led by self styled air marshal Noor Khan ordered a blanket ban on liquor shops and cinema halls in early 1990. Nearly 70 liquor outlets and bars and about 15 cinema halls had to pull down their shutters of their establishments since then.


State Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu, in a written reply shared these details in the state Legislative Council (Upper House) while responding to a specific question by a lawmaker of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Ashok Khajuria, who had sought the details about the revenue generated during past three years through the Excise, Sales Tax and VAT besides yearly consumption of IMFL.


Jammu and Kashmir had registered a sale of total 71.2 million bottles in 2014-15 fiscal which rose to 80.5 million in 2015-16 fiscal. Over 55.4 million bottles were sold in the Himalayan state between April and November last year, the reply document said.


According to the document, over 217.3 million bottles of IMFL, country made liquor pouches, beer and ready to drink had been guzzled down by tipplers in the state between April 2014 and November 2016.


Giving details, the finance minister further said the total revenue earned by the state through Excise, Sales Tax amounts to Rs 17,569 crore including Rs 7,292.84 crore estimated earnings during the current fiscal. ...
