Srinagar, October 26, (Scoop News)- The melody queen of Kashmir and Padam Shri awardee Raj Begum passed away this morning after a prolonged illness.She was 89.



She is survived by two sons and a daughter besides number of grandchildren.


The melody queen of Kashmir was born in Magarmal Bagh in Srinagar on March 27, 1927. She was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2002 and the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2013.



Raj Begum had been singing since she was a child, and started her career by singing at weddings, where she made a grand impression. She rose to become one of Kashmir’s most powerful, treasured female voices when Radio Kashmir Srinagar started post 1947; they would frequently broadcast her stellar compositions.

Governor N.N. Vohra has expressed grief over the sad demise of Raj Begum, a legendary Kashmiri singer.
Recalling her contributions to the Kashmiri music, the Governor has paid rich tributes to the melody queen whom he had met on several occasions in the past years.
In a condolence message the Governor has conveyed his sympathies to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.



Chief Minister, Ms Mehbooba Mufti has expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of Kashmir's legendary singer, Raj Begum, who passed away today in Srinagar.
In her condolence message, the Chief Minister while expressing grief over the loss of Kashmir’s treasured female voice, termed Raj Begum’s demise as an end of a great era in Kashmir's musical history and a huge loss for the State.
Extending her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Chief Minister has prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.




Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Nirmal Singh, today expressed grief over the demise of noted Kashmiri Singer Raj Begum who breathed her last today.
Dr. Singh said the veteran singer will be remembered for times to come and said her death has created a void which will be hard to fill. He hailed the late singer’s contribution in uplifting and preserving the Kashmir music.
In the condolence message, the Deputy CM prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss.




Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar today expressed condolences on the demise of legendary Kashmiri singer Raj Begum who breathed her last today. She was 89.
The Minister said that Raj Begum was the symbol of Kashmiri culture and her death has left vacuum in the art and cultural arena of the state.
He said that Begum with her mesmerizing voice had earned laurels not only in the State, but outside as well. He said that it was due to her golden voice that she earned the title of ‘Nightingale of Kashmir’.
He said that Begum will live forever in the hearts of people.
Mr. Akhtar prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and courage to her family members to bear the loss.




Minister of Finance, Culture and Labour and Employment, Dr Haseeb A Drabu has condoled the demise of Kashmir's veteran singer, Raj Begum, who passed away today in Srinagar.
In his condolence message, Dr Drabu said he is deeply saddened by the death of Raj Begum who vocalized Kashmiri culture and played a huge role in popularizing Kashmiri classic poetry by making it accessible to the people through her popular renditions.
"Along with Ghulam Hassan Sofi, she can be credited with creating a style and school of Kashmiri singing. Listening to her was pure joy and songs like 'Mashraev Thas Janane' and 'Rum Gaeyem Sheeshas' transport you to another world. May Allah grant her peace," Dr Drabu said.
Terming her death as the end of a great era in Kashmir's musical history, Dr Drabu has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. "Kashmir will remain indebted to her for her contribution. She has given us absolutely perfect renditions which popularized music and made her a household name," he said.
The Culture Minister said he prays for eternal peace for the departed soul whose majestic and melancholic voice had the power to stir even the stones. "While her death is a moment of great loss for us, her soul-stirring renditions have made her immortal in our cultural history," Dr Drabu said.







SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) and Sopori family has condoled the sad demise of the legendary singer of Jammu and Kashmir State Smt. Raj Begum.



Music legend Pt. Bhajan Sopori in a statement said that it is not only a loss to Jammu and Kashmir but also to the entire music world. Pt Sopori said that Smt. Raj Begum, with her unique style of singing, sung numerous songs in different styles like Ghazal, Geet, Chakri and Rouf, which will be remembered by the listeners forever. She reigned supreme in the field of Kashmiri folk music for more than four decades. He said that Sopori family and all the members of SaMaPa are with the family of Smt. Raj Begum at this moment of grief and pray to the almighty that her soul may rest in peace. SaMaPa had conferred upon her the prestigious SaMaPa Award in the year 2009 for her lifetime contribution to the Kashmiri folk music.



Adbee Markaz Kamraz (AMK) has expressed grief over the sad demise of Kashmir's noted singer Raj Begum.
In a statement issued here AMK spokesman said that with her death a golden chapter in the Kashmiri music has come to an end. "Raj Begum was undoubtedly the melody Queen of Kashmir and her mesmerising voice gave a new direction to music" said the spokesman adding that despite so many odds she enriched the music with her contribution that served as a great source of encouragement for youngsters.
Raj Begum's melodious voice has ruled the hearts and minds of thousands of people and she will be remembered for her soothing rendition, the statement said.
AMK spokesman extended solidarity with the family and prayed for her soul.
