Tsering Sandup inaugurates ‘Handicrafts Exhibition-cum-Demonstration’

Leh, September 26, (Scoop News)-Executive Councillor Tourism & Handicraft LAHDC Leh Tsering Sandup today inaugurated the opening ceremony of the ten-day ‘Handicrafts Exhibition-cum-Demonstration’ being organized by the LAHDC Leh & Directorate of Handicrafts J&K at Indoor Stadium Leh.

Addressing the gathering, EC Tsering Sandup appreciated the idea of conducting such State level exhibition here in Leh which will help benefit the local artisans by giving them the chance to exhibit their talent through such exhibitions.
Due to direct benefit from this sector, Sandup said that the handicraft sector in a way can be termed as more important than tourism in keeping the old tradition alive.
Talking about the importance of Pashmina, and other allied sectors he said that the Council with the help of the recent fund of Rs. 50 crore granted under Prime Minister Development Programme will help provide for proper market for these products in coming times.
Talking about the existing exhibition stalls at Delhi Haat in New Delhi where major portion of tourists throng for traditional crafts, Sandup requested Joint Director Handicrafts to consider having stalls there for Ladakhi crafts also.
Addressing the younger generation of Ladakh, EC Sandup said that during old times due to the land-lock geographic set-up of Ladakh, our ancestors were self-reliant and self-sufficient in every sector and therefore urged them to preserve the handicraft of Ladakh by their active participation in atleast one of the various important crafts.
Work is also going on for erecting a craft bazaar which would be beneficial for permanent display of crafts at one particular place for the ease and convenience of the buyers as well as the sellers, added Sandup.

Earlier, welcoming the guests, Joint Director Handicraft Kashmir Nazir Ahmed Mir termed handicraft sector is important in preserving the culture of a region and also plays a vital role in generating employment among the youths especially among the women from rural and semi-urban areas and the department thus becomes as a direct source of income to a large section of the society. These kinds of exhibition provide a platform to the local artisans to showcase their products and explore the markets on state and outside level. From Leh the exhibition is scheduled to visit Katra, Chandigarh and further to New Delhi and then will be part of international exhibition also in the month of January, informed Mir.
Talking about fund constraints which had let to decline in export due to absence of proper infrastructure in place, Mir was thankful of the Centre Government for the recent 50 crore PM Development Programme help which will boost this potential-filled sector, added Mir. He also talked about the steps required in up-gradation of the handicraft products as per the present market.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner Leh Mosis Kunzang, Accounts Officer Jigmet, Deputy Registrar Cooperatives Sonam Norboo, officers and officials of Handicraft Department Leh were also present on the occasion along with artisans & trainees from different parts of Ladakh and Srinagar.

At the end, Assistant Director Handicrafts Sonam Gyurmet delivered the vote of thanks speech
Exhibition had crewel, Ari Stapple, Paper Machie, Sozni, Chain Stitch, Tapastrey, Copper, and Woodcarving under Kashmiri crafts and various crafts as Thanka painting, clay moulding, woodcarving, Chilling copper, Pashmina, Pottery, Knitting, Ladakhi Garment Making, and Carpet Weaving crafts as part of the exhibition. Also materials prepared from waste materials prepared by the specially abled persons and eateries like momo, apricot, fried barley are also part of the exhibition.

A colourful cultural programme enthralled the audience present in large number to witness the opening ceremony of the exhibition.
