Burhan’s Killing just an excuse, Situation different from the last One Year

By Vikas Razdan

The killing of Burhan Wani was just an excuse for the turbulence to erupt. It was not only Wani’s killing which had inclined people’s interest towards widespread protest but inclination of locals towards militants had drastically increased from the last few years.
From the last one year, situation had worsened in Kashmir, apart from stone pelting incidents followed by anti national slogans, waving of ISIS and Pakistan flags there was rise in encounters, grenade explosions, and attacks on police and army personals.
Matter which was of concern was the increasing numbers of civilians gathering at the scenes of clashes and the funerals of militants. From the last so many years locals had developed sympathies for the militants and many of them particularly youngsters had joined militancy.

Huge crowds would converge at funerals of militants where people would eulogize the martyrdom of their boys.

At every funeral prayer of militants, Kashmiri women would sing songs of valor, garland their dead bodies. However these were indicative their sympathy for the militants and reflected a renewed interest by a newer, younger, and more internet-savvy generation of Kashmir towards militancy.

Apart from this some militants were reportedly joined the funeral procession flaunting guns and opening fire in the air and offering three volley salute with guns much like the comrades in the 1990’s when militancy was at its peak in the valley.

Growing support for militants in the form of a large number of mourners at their funerals were alarming signals for the security agencies.

Apart from this the attack on army coveys had increased manifolds for the last few months. Fifteen troopers had been killed and over 60 injured in half-a-dozen militant attacks on convoys or road opening parties of central forces in Jammu and Kashmir in the last one year.

What is more, much like the early nineties, militants are now making intermittent appearances at the protest rallies. Recently most dreaded militants surfaced in public rallies in south Kashmir brandishing their weapons. On August 1, this year, Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, Abu Dujana, wearing a mask, attended a protest gathering at a "martyrs' cemetery" in Karimabad, Pulwama. Dujana is considered by security agencies to be the mastermind behind several attacks, such as the one on a CRPF convoy at Pampore and another at the Entrepreneurship Development Institute in the Sempora area this year.

On August 2, two unidentified militants surfaced at a rally in the Koimoh area of Kulgam district. They warned the gathering not to inform police and other security agencies about the whereabouts of militants.

On August 3, three unidentified militants, with their faces covered, appeared during a rally at Arwani in Anantnag district's Bijbehara.

On August 14, miltants with their faces covered appeared in a protest rally in Redwani Kulgam flaunting their weapons and firing shots in air with waving of Pakistani Flag.

With the rise in sympathy and local support for the militants, and ascend in encounters, grenade explosions, attacks on police and army personals, surfacing of militants in public rallies is matter of grave concern and how security agencies are going to tackle with all these things is a million dollar question and security agencies will have tough time ahead to deal with such episodes.
