Ladakh administration plans to revive defunct cheese plants, increase milk production
import frozen semen of yak from Arunchal Pradesh to improve stock efficiency of its cattle

Leh (Ladakh), August 25, (Scoop News)-People of Ladakh region are perturbed with the constant decline in the yak population in the region and if officials are to believed, there has been whopping fall of nearly 60 percent in past over six decades. About 50,000 yaks were enumerated last year in the entire region.



“The concern of the people is genuine as there has been a steady drop of the yak population by 60 percent over the years since late 50’s and to deal with the prevailing alarming situation, the local administration has decided to import frozen semen for cross breeding from National Research Centre (NRC) on yak in Arunachal Pradesh,” the official sources said, adding “this may also improve stock efficiency of our cattle.”



Local administration has sought a financial help of over 50 million rupees for conservation of the animal from the Union Government with an intention to conserve the animal and also to produce delectable yellow cheese from the milk of yak. The administration also plans to restart two plants near Leh in next few months which were out of business due to technical glitches and shortage of manpower.



Yak is the main source of income for the people in the region because of its varied advantages from meat, milk and wool, the bull yak is called a ship on mountains for carrying huge loads to distant areas for traders besides tilling of agricultural land of farmers.



According to census report compiled by district administration, there has been consistent decline of yak population over the years from nearly 45,000 to about 13,000 yaks in 2007. Since 2011, the population of yaks has increased to over 23,000 in Leh district and about 25,000 yaks in Kargil district at present.



Surprisingly, there are scores of wild yaks scattered in the mountainous ranges of Ladakh region.



Zo and Zomo is a crossbreed between a yak and a local cow and is commonly found across Ladakh region these days.
