Oral health is linked with general health: says VC, JU
.
jammu, July 23(Scoop News)- In order to address the problems of oral health ailments rampant among the masses where 95% of adults suffer from gum diseases, 50% of Indian citizens don't use a toothbrush and more alarmingly that 70% of children under the age of 15 have dental caries, a oral health awareness and dental check-up camp was organized by the Health Centre, University of Jammu, today.

In the Camp, Dr. Gautam Sharma, Dental Surgeon, University of Jammu and President, Indian Dental Association (IDA), Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Secretary IDA and Dr.Aamir Shams Malik, Periodontist were the experts who conducted an oral health screening of the students and residents of University Campus.
On this occasion, Prof.R.D.Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, he expressed his satisfaction on the overwhelming response of the residents of the campus who attended the camp in large numbers. He informed that besides utilisation of other services, the stakeholders should take advantage of the infrastructure for dental care existing in the University Health Centre. Although “Prevention is better than cure” but people should not fear the dental treatment and should give high importance to oral health since there is a direct link between oral health and general health, he remarked. The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the supporting dentists, Dr. Aamir Shams and Dr. Bhupinder Singh and M/S Abbott Pharmaceuticals for supporting the cause.
While examining the Dental patients, Dr. Gautam Sharma observed a tremendous rise in the cases of Nursing Bottle Caries among children which spoil the upper front four milk teeth. He said the most common cause of these caries in early childhood is incessant and prolonged exposure of the baby’s teeth to nursing bottles containing juices etc. and advised the accompanying mothers to wipe the gums and teeth of babies with soft and clean cloth after every feed and regularly visit the dentist. He also said that dental infections can be fatal and a known cause of various systemic diseases including cardiac problems. Dr.Aamir Shams gave tips for keeping the teeth and gums in good shape. He said that most of the dental diseases can be prevented by simple practice of brushing twice daily with a soft bristle brush. The basic aim of brushing should be to remove a thin bio film known as plaque. Dr. Bhupinder Singh assured that IDA will extend all possible support to the University health Centre for such health and dental awareness programmes.
Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Head, Department of Botany, and Convener of Health Centre Advisory Committee, said that health camps and awareness lectures has been a regular and perpetual feature of the health centre and similar such endeavours on various health issues shall be continued in future as well.
Dr.Shabana Azmi, Medical Officer, extended a warm welcome to the guests and thanked them for their presence and participation in the dental check-up camp. Mr. Ashish Gupta and Mr. Manish Channa from Abbott Pharmaceuticals provided free gift samples of mouth wash, desensitising toothpaste, antibiotics and analgesics to the health centre for distribution to the participants in the camp.
