The mission of self-destruction

By K. N. Pandita

What we see in the valley is the mission of self-destruction at work. It is sad. Let me explain.

Pakistan is viciously reacting to Modi’s diplomatic and economic forays into the developed countries as well as Central and West Asia.

It is perturbed by Modi making deep inroads into the littoral States, which Pakistan at one time thought was its extended backyard. More ominous is Saudi Arabia going responsive to him.

What makes Islamabad stand on wits end is that during his jaunt to Saudi Arabia, Modi did not have to hear Saudi rant against Iran, the country with which India has developed closer strategic, economic and cultural relations.

During Modi’s trips to Gulf countries, Saudi and Iran, besides the US, Kashmir issue remained relegated to the back burner. Instead, terrorism figured conspicuously in his speeches with oblique references to its existing epicenter in our proximity.

Pakistan has realized how much irrelevant Modi has made Kashmir narrative to these prominent members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Henceforth their resolution on Kashmir will become the joke of the year.

While clip-winged civilian government in Islamabad would only wait and watch, of course not with much alarm, the emerging role of India in regional and global strategies, the GHQ cannot bear mortification. Modi’s full term stay in power could prove devastating to the hegemony of olive green power in Pakistan.

What are the woes of the GHQ that make it betray symptoms of recklessness? General Raheel’s jaunts to the Pentagon and entreaties with the White House proved imbecile. The F-16 nuke armed fighter aircraft deal ended in fiasco. The promised military aid package of US 300 million dollars stands frozen. General’s buddies in Pentagon have not given only cold shoulder but have adopted almost hostile attitude. The annual performance report on Pakistan recently submitted by the Pentagon to the American Congress speaks eloquently of Pakistan’s double speak. The Americans ask for Haqqani’s blood but Pakistan declines to treat Haqqani as faithlessly as she treated Osama.

The worst yet to come is that the US Congress has called special session to discuss the double speak of Pakistan and the consequential action Congress is likely to recommend to the administration.
The Dawn of 11 July wrote, “The House Subcommittees on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade and Asia and the Pacific are jointly holding this hearing, hoping that it would help them determine how to deal with Pakistan, an old ally many in Congress no longer trust. The chairman of one of the subcommittees is a Republican lawmaker, Congressman Ted Poe, who never makes an effort to hide his dislike for Pakistan”. It went on to say, “”This hearing will give members the opportunity to learn more about Pakistan’s longstanding ties to terrorist groups and allow for a more informed reassessment of US foreign policy priorities vis-à-vis Islamabad,” said Mr. Poe while explaining why he had called the hearing.

Reporting on the subject, New York Times wrote, “The United States has spent tens of billions of taxpayer dollars in aid to Pakistan since 9/11. Now, 15 years later, Pakistan’s military and intelligence services are still linked to terrorist organisations and little success has been made to stabilize the region,” said Congressman Matt Salmon, who heads the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.

“We must take a closer look at US goals, expectations and our aid spending in the region. In this hearing, we will discuss the Administration’s failed policy towards Pakistan and debate the best way forward,” he said.

Never before has the Pentagon or the Capital Hill come to censure a country about which the hawks said with sadist pride was “more allied than an ally”.
Therefore GHQ is out to find ways and means of reinstating its crumbling status as the arbiter of Pakistan’s destiny. The warring stalwarts in Islamabad have carried their internecine battle to the precincts of the Capitol Hill.

Driven to wall, the GHQ hawks find that they have no lever handier than Kashmir to whip up public passion and garner support of the hordes of rabid fanatics within the country. This lever is effective as long as the people in the valley stick like a leech to the mission of self-destruction.

In its issue of 12 July, the Dawn splashed the news that suddenly thousands of posters appeared in almost all major cities of Pakistan, including some cantonments, appealing — in somewhat elegiac manner— the Pak army to step on to the stage. It said: “ab to khuda ke lie ajao”.

Sadists insist it is the handiwork of ISI and a forewarning to the Pakistani nation to be prepared for another spell of martial law administration.
It is in the background of this brewing scenario that for some months in the past, Kashmir has been witnessing escalation of militancy and militancy related acts like bid for larger infiltration, anti-India public protests and media hype, recurring attacks on police and security forces, disinformation spree and more and more defiance of law enforcing apparatus. ISI has galvanized Kashmir Jamaat-i-Islami into action.

In order to shatter the walls isolating Pakistan in the comity of nations, overt and covert fomenting of maressive spurt in Kashmir insurgency is used as the effective weapon. The so-called non-state actors have been fully galvanized into action. Soon after the news of gunning down of Burhan, the HuM terrorist commander came, JuD chief Hafiz Saeed and Salahu’d-Din of UJC met in Muzaffarabad to decide their future action how best to use Jamaat-i-Islami cadres of Kashmir in fueling the flames of unrest.

Pakistan foreign office as well as the office of the Prime Minister lost no time to issue strong word condemnation of the killing of Burhan. Islamabad summoned the Indian High Commissioner and handed him
The censuring note alleged the killing as “extrajudicial”. Nawaz Sharif’s office was equally vocal and hard-hitting. Ironically, both talked of “violation” of human rights of the people in Kashmir.

Sane Pakistanis know that the outburst of their foreign and PM’s office is for the consumption of the Generals and their valley-based separatist constituency, otherwise they have the least sympathy for beleaguered Kashmiris.
Hawks in GHQ planning in tandem with Kashmir centric terrorist outfits expects India to launch full scale retaliatory attack that would give them the lever of proving themselves sinless in the eyes of the world community more especially the US.
Planners in GHQ will need to learn many more lessons in the methodology of terrorism because the lessons hitherto learnt have been exhausted by its valley-based constituency.
