Pervez Musharraf should be called ‘Perverse’ Musharraf

By Farooq Ganderbali

General Pervez Musharraf, former President and Army Chief of Pakistan should be known as ‘perverse’ Musharraf. The former commando has in the recent past gone public on a number of issues relating to India-Pakistan relations. Recently, he announced the well-known fact that Pakistan had raised the Taliban and other groups like the LeT. The twist in the tale added was that earlier individuals in these organizations were religious persons, who later went on to become terrorists! Such poppycock!

The reality is that the world has known for a long time now that the Pakistani state has nurtured and sponsored terrorist groups and organizations for many decades now. The nuance to this story is that the Army is now using Pervez Musharraf to tell the world that Pakistan created terrorist monsters who were ‘religious’ individuals. One must ask Pakistan as to how religious leaders got weapons to attack India and its interests across South Asia?

There is another angle to this madness. Musharraf is a man whose survival in Pakistan has been ensured by the Army. But for the uniform, Musharraf would have been hanged many months ago. The Army used every tactic in the book to get PM Sharif to back off and saved Musharraf’s skin. So it is now payback time and remember, Mush has no problem with that for that is precisely what he has done all his life. He was responsible for the Kargil war in 1999. In the late 1980’s, Mushrraf masterminded the massacre of Shias in Gilgit Baltistan. This guy has a track record of creating trouble!

The discourse that Pakistan is trying to push now is that the Taliban, LeT and other terrorist groups were created by civilian governments. Yes, it is true that the Taliban was created by Benazir Bhutto’s interior minister Babar, but the fact is that the LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammed and other such outfits are creations of the ISI/Army. In the case of the Taliban, once the ISI got hold of the Taliban, it is they who controlled (and continue to control) the Quetta Shura.

In the last two years, Musharraf has made a number of statements regarding Kashmir, India-Pak relations and Pak support to extremist organizations. These have been timed to coincide with some issue relating to bilateral relations. Therefore, he is clearly speaking his master’s voice. More importantly, Musharraf, having the advantage of hindsight, is willing to twist facts to suit his own interpretation. This trend must be countered immediately as it could lead to distortions in historical facts.

Pakistan’s effort today is to counter India’s allegations in all spheres. That is why it is claiming that India is involved in acts of terrorism in Balochistan. That is one part of the narrative. The fact is that recent Pak aggression in disclosing its links with terrorist elements past and present are with a view to pacifying the US, which as the Joint Statement issued after PM Sharif’s US visit shows, wants Islamabad to crack down on the Haqqani Network and the LeT. The aggressiveness in the Pak narrative needs to be taken at face value, for the US knows quite well what Islamabad is upto!

However, the challenge lies in getting the US to look beyond Afghanistan and take a call on reconciliation with the Taliban a little slow at this juncture, because the battle between the Taliban and pro-ISIS forces in Afghanistan is heating up. Additionally, the Taliban itself has split with one faction announcing Mullah Mohammad Rasool Akhund as the leader of the new faction, with Mohammed Dadullah as its Deputy Leader.

Stating facts on the ground from Afghanistan in an exquisite report Al Jazeera recently spoke of the presence of ISIS there. Many local officials interviewed reported that Pak ISI was backing the ISIS in Afghanistan. There are also reports of Punjabi speaking individuals moving along with ISIL members in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces.

Therefore, one must take Pervez Musharraf’s outpourings with a pinch nay a bucket of salt. All his talk merits little media space, but unfortunately, publicity mongers play to the gallery instead of ignoring the words of a fallen Army chief and a man who is being tried for ‘high treason’ in Pakistan. There rests the strange case of ‘perverse’ Musharraf who takes pride in giving others pain! Less said about him the better.
