Ved Bhasin's contribution to growth of English journalism in J&K can't be ignored

From M.L.Kak

As a great man and Editor Ved Bhasin lived his life with his chin up and which should be one of his greatest qualities. What had drawn the great Editor to me was his belief in impartiality. As Editor he was not a salable entity and on many occasions, that too for years together,he would be seen in great conflict with the successive state Governments.

Though he was strict in dealing with his employees but at the same time he would be liberal, especially to those whom he had found hard working and intelligent.Yes, one need not underestimate his contribution to the growth of English journalism in Jammu and Kashmir This could be possible because he had been editing the state’s one of the oldest English newspaper.

I may not be wrong if I believe, that too rightly,Ved Bhasin has acted a torch bearer for scores of people who have started editing and publishing newspapers in Jammu and Kashmir.Bhasin had all the qualities of a great Editor. He was well read and continued to remain in touch with political, economic developments not only in his state but in India and abroad also.

Besides having a flare for writing he was an interesting conversationalist.A great orator too.He could wield a strong pen, talk sense and regale his colleagues with interesting anecdotes. This was possible because he was well read and continued to read newspapers, books, periodicals and magazines even during the time he was ailing.

He held his head high because he would show his courage in fighting against injustice.Injustice from Governments or committed by individuals.

Above all he was a social animal ready to help his colleagues, employees or even any one he found in distress.Normally successful Editors live in ivory towers but Ved Bhasin would gladly mingle with people around him. This habit used to give him an opportunity for knowing various aspects of the social and political scene in Jammu and Kashmir.

He was well connected. He had association with senior political leaders, top bureaucrats and industrialists. However, this equation with the mighty had not motivated him to lose his touch with common people.

He would be remembered for his contribution to the growth of journalism in Jammu and Kashmir.May his soul rest in peace.
