| CUK V-C for preservation of language, culture and ethos | |
Srinagar, August 25 (Scoop News)-Central University of Kashmir (CUK) officiating Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din today underscored the need for preservation of languages, cultures and ethos of particular regions, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The language, literature and culture are extremely important characters of any region and if we are able to preserve them for our future generations, it will be an achievement for us and we shall be doing a great service to our community,” Prof. Mehraj ud Din said while addressing the inaugural session of the three-day national seminar on “Language, Literature and Culture: Intersections and Interrogations” organised by the Department of English, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) at its Nowgam academic block.
While hailing the English department for organising the seminar, he said that language in any part of the world has been deeply influenced by the regimes coming to power at a particular time. Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din He said the University was exploring the option of setting up a Centre, which would conduct research on endangered languages in the State.
Prof. Siddiq Wahid, former Vice-Chancellor, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Prof. Sumanyu Satpathy, Professor and Head Department of English, University of Delhi, Prof. Muhammad Aslam, Dean School of Languages, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, Registrar CUK, Deans of different Schools, Head and Coordinators of Different Departments, Director Students Welfare, were among others present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, former Vice-Chancellor, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Prof. Siddiq Wahid advocated for providing adequate space and freedom to the stakeholders to raise questions about various policy decisions, taken by the higher educational institutions. He said the main issue with the current education system is the hierarchy, which needs to be dispensed with to create a better work environment.
Professor and Head Department of English, University of Delhi, Prof. Sumanyu Satpathy, while delivering the keynote address, dwelt upon the communalisation of languages in India and traced its history. He said that association of languages with particular communities had been going on since times immemorial.
Prof. Satpathy blamed the lackadaisical approach of the top administrators in failing to make changes in the present educational set up. “The academicians are seldom made part of the process for transforming the academics,” he said.
Earlier, Dean School of Languages, Prof. Muhammad Aslam, welcomed the participants and introduced the seminar theme. He said that several Kashmiri authors have written novels and books and have been successful in portraying the agony of masses, which they have suffered. Prof. Aslam said the local authors have always kept in mind the traditions, ethos and culture of Kashmir while writing books. Prof. Aslam also gave a brief account of the Department and its activities.
Assistant Prof. Dr Ihsan-ur-Rahim Malik conducted the programme proceedings while as Assistant Professor, Ms. Ishrat Bashir presented the vote of thanks.
