Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrated at Drass war memorial
PM pays tribute to Kargil martyrs


Kargil, July 26 (Scoop News)- The 16th Operation Vijay Diwas was celebrated at Drass War Memorial Kargil, GOC-in-C Northern Command, Lieutenant General DS Hooda,was the chief guest and along other Senior Officers of Indian Army and Local dignitaries paid tribute to the martyrs of the Operation Vijay during Kargil war in 1999.

On the occasion scores of relatives of martyrs of Kargil war also participated in the ceremony of Operation Vijay Diwas.

Lieutenant General DS Hooda told that the victory of OP Vijay was a historical victory. He told that Indian Army has significantly strengthened its positions in Western Ladakh since 1999, as also enhanced its surveillance and response capabilities. The Northern command is well prepared, not only to deny our adversary and opportunity but also to respond suitably.

The Army Commander interacted with the ‘Next of Kin’ of the martyrs, Veer Naris and the gallantry award winners. The serious mood at the ceremony brought home memories of the losses borne so proudly by the martyrs families in the bloody summer of 1999. Many in the audience were moved to tears when the buglers played the poignant tune of “The Last Post” after the
wreath laying.

The commemorative event is held every year to mark India’s latest victory, also give many people the rare opportunity to meet the heroes
of the conflict in person and interact with them.


It may be mentioned here tha The Kargil War, karagil jang, karagil yuddh, also known as the Kargil conflict, was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place between May and July 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC). The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants into positions on the Indian side of the LOC, which serves as the de facto border between the two states.



Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tributes to the Indian armed forces, and hailed their valour and sacrifices which was demonstrated in the Kargil conflict in 1999.

"I salute the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the beloved nation," he tweeted.

The Kargil Diwas reminds us of the valour and sacrifices of the Indian armed forces, the Prime Minister said.
