ISIS, a looming threat- authorities lack policy to ward off growing radicalization

Jammu, July 5, (Scoop News)-Kashmir based strategic analysts have notified the central authorities and state administration against the occasional surfacing of pro ISIS flags particularly in the summer capital, Chenab valley and Pir Panjal area besides growing Jihadi activities in the north Himalayan state.

These analysts fear whether the government has a clear cut policy to ward off radicalization activities in the state. Surprisingly, they say, policy makers in India have not yet understood the magnitude and potential of the looming threat of radicalization to the country and the state.

“India has always been taken by a surprise by its invaders, particularly from the west. Internal squabbles, political intrigues, water and border disputes and selfishness has been the cause of its fall and for getting subdued”, said Ramesh Kumar, a journalist.

Former head of the Research and analysis Wing (RAW), AS Dulat, told a reporter, Neelam Raaj, in an interview, “Pakistan flags don’t worry me at all since those are hoisted and waved at any little provocation. But ISIS flags which have become a weekly occurrence are worrisome. This shows a certain bent of mind among the youth. That they are being affected by the salahfism. The kind of militancy we tsee these days is more frightening. Some of these boys are well educated and they come from middle class or upper middle class families”.

Shockingly, the authorities are trying to downplay this threat. Even Federal Interior Minister, Raj Nath Singh, talked of situation under control in Kashmir and saw no ISIS flags there and therefore rightly remarked by a fellow scribe “if you shut your eyes you will obviously see no evil”.

On Friday last, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 16th Corps, Lt. Gen KH Singh, warned that terror outfit Islamic State (ISIS) is trying to gain foothold in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK).

“The inputs available with us suggest that ISIS is definitely trying to gain foothold in that part of Kashmir. So far, they have not taken in a major way but they are trying hard”, he told a group of reporters on the sidelines of an army function to commemorate the sacrifice of Brigadier Mohammed Usman, a veteran war hero of “Battle of Nowshehra” fought in 1947-48 against Pakistan regulars and raiders.

Islamic State (ISIS) appeared from nowhere last year on first day of Ramzan, holy month of Muslim fasting, after conquering Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and announced the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate with no borders in the Middle East and intends to extend them as far as Central Asia and India. As on date, it controls large swathes of land inhabited by hundreds of thousands of people. The outfit acquired infamy by resorting to indiscriminate killings, beheadings and savage treatment of women folks from other religious groups or ethnicities.

“Jihad has become a kind of lifestyle of a mutinous youth. Their dress code is same –the black long shirts and loose trousers, the style of waving guns aloft is very much the same and the use of pickup vans is also the same”, said a state official, requesting not to be named.
