Three different psyches

By Amit Kushari,IAS, (Retd)

Mother India gave birth to 3 nations, Pakistan, Bharat(India), and Bangladesh. The 3 sister nations obviously have the same DNA, being born of the same mother and therefore have such overwhelming similarities in language, literature, music, food and dress habits, old beliefs and superstitions that foreigners can hardly distinguish between these three sisters. But only we know the hard way what type of horrible sibling rivalries we have and we just cannot get over these petty things. India has repeatedly tried to make friends with her sisters. While she has got quite a warm response from Bangladesh, the response from Pakistan was cold and hostile. The three nations have three really different psyches and we must understand this better for further improving our relations. We offered ‘most favoured nation’ status to Pakistan but there is no reciprocal offer from Pakistan, yet. Pakistan is troubling us endlessly on the border by sending terrorists and by attacking our border posts and border villages and now the intelligence reports suggest that there could be an aerial attack on Delhi and Mumbai by Pak terrorists of ‘Jaish e Muhammad’ to kill our top leaders, like Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi and Pranab Mukherjee. Bangla Desh is not openly hostile to India, rather their leaders are quite warm towards India, but they are creating another problem for us. Being a poor , overpopulated nation, their citizens are surreptitiously sneaking into India in thousands and are taking part in criminal activities like terrorism, dacoity, theft, plunder and rape. Indians living in the border districts are scared that they may be drowned in the flood of illegal immigrants.

Pakistan was born out of hatred and suspicion for the Hindus, since Muslims feared that in independent India they would be deprived of justice as they would be far outnumbered by Hindus. Muslim league which fought for Pakistan had the two-nation theory ingrained in their psyche although India rejected this theory and gave a call to all communities to consider India their home. The national anthem of India, written by the great poet, Tagore, calls on all Indians to rise in the name of God and seek his blessings for the overall good of the nations(Jana Gana Mangala Dayaka …..). It is a perfectly secular call to all citizens and it doesn’t say anything about hoisting a saffron flag of the Hindu community. The national anthem of Bangladesh, is also a secular anthem being composed by the same great poet, Tagore. Although 90% of the inhabitants of Bangladesh are Muslims, 18 million Hindus live in Bangladesh peacefully. After the departure of Pakistan from Bangladesh, the flight of Hindus from Bangladesh decreased. At present, very few Hindu Bangladeshis are entering India…only the poor Muslims are coming in search of jobs and money.

The scenario in Pakistan is entirely different. Almost all the Hindus have been squeezed out. There is no democracy in Pakistan even for Muslims and for a Hindu to expect democratic rights in Pakistan would be a laughable proposition, indeed. The national anthem of Pakistan, their “Quomi Taranah”, written by the poet, Hafiz Jalandhari, depicts the great desire of its citizens to move away from their mother towards the middle east, just on the basis of religion. The anthem has hardly any Pakistani word in it except one word ‘tu'(you). All other words are Iranian words and it would be wrong to call them Urdu words. Urdu words are essentially Pakistani or Indian words. In the absence of these words the song cannot cause waves of resonance in the hearts of Pakistanis as it is simply not intelligible except for those who have studied Persian at a higher level. In contrast, the Jana Gana Mana, creates waves of patriotism in the hearts of all Indians, Amaar Sonar Bangla fills up Bangladeshi hearts with nationalism. The Pakistani national anthem has only a passing reference to the beauty of Pakistan (Kishwar-e-haseen shaad baad) and a passing reference to the progress of the country. It envisages Pakistan as a centre of Islamic faith (Markaz-e-Yaqeen) and as the ultimate cherished goal of Muslims (Manzil-e- Muraad) . It depicts how much the Muslims disliked living in Hindu majority India and how they yearned for an Islamic home state. To us Indians, it is a regrettable communal mind set and many Indians cannot even comprehend it. So recently when a Kashmiri woman leader, in a burqa, sang “Pak Sar Zameen Shaad Baad”, and saluted the “parcham-e-hilal” (the Islamic flag of cresent and star, the Pakistan national flag), on Pakistan day, the whole of India was horrified, but what action could India take against her? Perhaps an FIR has been filed but has she been punished in any way? Obviously the lady has not reconciled herself to being a citizen of India. Perhaps the political leadership of Kashmir is a helpless spectator in the absence of a concrete plan to remove the feeling of alienation among the Kashmiris and for solving the political problem of the Kashmir valley.
