Wish “Julley” without shaking hands, best solution to stop Swine Flu in Ladakh:DHO

Leh,February 23, (Scoop News)-Taking proactive steps to prevent Swine Flu in Leh district and to spread awareness among general public, the ZEO Office Leh headed by ZEO, Leh Punchok Angchuk under the direction of District Administration, Leh, organized a meeting of all the Sarpanches and VEC members of Leh and surrounding villages at Leh conference hall today.
Chairing the meeting District Health Officer, Leh Dr. Manzoor-ul-Haq said that use of “Julley” the traditional way of saying hello, goodbye, thank you or welcome by we Ladakhis without shaking hands is the best solution to stop Swine Flu in Ladakh at these moment of time as it is recognised that hands can play an important role in spreading the virus between people and also contaminating objects. He informed the meeting that health department Leh has already procured Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) drugs used in the treatment of H1N1 flu and will be provided to patents if needed with the recommendation of doctors. For testing of H1N1 flu, he said that health dept, Leh is in touch with NCDC Delhi and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Medical College Srinagar whenever needed. Urging upon Sarpanches and VEC members to educate general public at their respective villages about the flu, he said that health department will also organized awareness programmes at village level in coming days.
Dr. Manzoor through a power point presentation educated all and participants about the H1N1 flu and while responding to the queries of Sarpanches and VEC members about the flu, Dr. Manzoor expounding in detail said that H1N1 flu is a new influenza virus that is spreading from person-to-person and thought to spread the same way seasonal flu spreads. Symptoms of H1N1 flu in people are similar to those associated with seasonal flu like fever, cough, score throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and in addition vomiting and diarrhea have been also reported.
Precautionary stapes needed to be taken are wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 15-20 seconds especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand wipes or gel sanitizers are also effective. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Avoid contact with sick people. Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin. If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible.
Educating the meeting about Do’s and Don’ts in this regard, Dr. Manzoor stressed upon few points which are :- Cover your Mouth and Nose with a handkerchief or Tissue paper when you Cough or Sneeze, and wash your handkerchief daily. Wash your Hand often with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Avoid crowded places: stay more than an arm’s length from person affected with flu. Stay away from public places if you have fever, coughing and sneezing. Don’t shake hands or use other contract greetings. Don’t spit in public. Don’t take medicines without consulting the Physician.

Responding to the question of Chief Education Officer, Leh Tsewang Punchok about the danger of swine flu in residential hostels, Dr. Manzoor suggested to create a separate room for students who are effected with cold at all the residential schools.
Similarly under the chairmanship of SDM Khaltsi Barkat Ali Loan a meeting of all the Sarpanches and VEC members of Khaltsi Sub Division was also held at SDM conference hall Khaltsi in which BMO, Khaltsi Dr. Diskit Dolma and Physician Dr. Lotos Gyaltson awared all the participants about swine flu.
