Worthlessness of Politics

By Dr. Ved Pratap Vaidik

Worthlessness is a slightly strong word. But for the time being I feel like using the same word for our Politics. Why is it so? It is because I have witnessed the Indian politics 60 years for the last. I have had pleasure to work with leaders and workers of almost every political party in Indore and Delhi. What is the difference between the parties of those days and of today? Earlier also, there was a strong urge for the power. To influence a vote, earlier also, the power of caste, religion, language, liquor, money and other elusive ways were used, but all this dodging was carried out only at the time of elections. But what they used to do during the rest 5 years? Whatever used to be the ideology of the different political parties, all leaders and party workers used to engage themselves in the spread of that ideology mass education. There used to be big conventions in which promotion of Khadi, cleanliness, self-reliance, basic education and campaigns for removal of untouchability were carried out by Congress. Samajwadi party used to campaign against English language, breaking the caste barriers, cleaning the rivers and ask for Indo-Pak unity. Communist party used to awaken the labourers and farmers by organizing them and inculcating in them class consciousness. They empowered them to fight for themselves, educated them about the philosophy of Marxism. Parties like Jansangh used propagate nationalism in their agendas. They stressed on agendas like Protection of the cow, saving Indian culture, ‘Goa- Mukti’ campaign, campaign against foreign Christian missionaries.

But what is happening now? Now the ideology is dead. All the parties have gone bankrupt. They have become only one dimentional, oriented in one direction only. No worker or leader has a separate identity left. That is the reason, every second day, we hear the cases of defections from one party to other. Even the stalwarts change their parties as they change their shoes. What do these parties do? They have got a single aim. Vote and Note. That is why they do not think of anything else but elections. These days political parties are not interested in politics, they just fight elections. They have become election machines. They are only concerned about the power but not the service.

They think that only power is the “Brahma”, rest all is “Maya”. What is the meaning of power to them? To become a Prime Minister or a Chief Minister; to establish their own cabinets; which implies to get hold on bureaucracy. As soon as the party comes to power it forgets into basic function. Its only motto is to sing glories of the party leaders and minting money by doing liaison work. Would you call this politics? The only aim of all politicians is to capture the state bureaucracy and through it reap the benefits of power. The party and people are brushed aside. They don’t educate the people and they don’t activate the party workers. They becomes the Boss of bureaucracy and the bureaucracy become their Boss. The real politics become redundant. That is why I call Worthlessness of Politics.
