Thiksay Gustor festival to be celebrated on November 9th & 10th

Leh, September 26, (Scoop News)-The Thiksay Gustor is a two day festival to be celebrated in Ladakh on November 9th & 10th.
It may be mentioned that the programmes of ladakh festival 2014 which was scheduled to be held 20th to 26th September in leh was cancelled due to the natural calmity in jk state in shape of flood disaster.
Thiksay Gustor festival is celebrated at Thiksey Gompa – 18 km from Leh, Ladakh.The first day started with prayers followed by Chams (mask dance) performed by the monks of the same monastery. Some of the main features of the two day ritual performance, besides Chams, include the oracle, and the dismembered and dispersal of the Storma (Sacrificial Cake) by the leader of the Black hat dancers during the ceremony called “Argham” or “killing”. This marks the end of the ceremony and symbolises the destruction of all form of evil. On the occasion the assassination of the Tibetan apostate King Lang-Darma, by a Buddhist monk in the mid 9th century is also enacted.
The annual festival held in the monastery environs is known as the
Gustor ritual, which is held from the 17th to 19th day of the ninth month of the Tibetan calendar (October–November). Gustor literally means ‘Sacrifice of the 29th day’. It is typically old-style and traditional to the monasteries.

. This festival is celebrated at various monasteries of Thiksey, Spituk and Karsha Nanzkar. The word ‘Gustor’ means ‘sacrificing the 29th date. During the festival, there are early morning prayers. After the festival is concluded, there is a distribution of the sacrificial cake, also known as the Torma during a ceremony called ‘Argham’ or ‘klling’. The leader of the Black Hat dancers does this distribution, marking the end of the festival and commemorating the victory of good over bad. There is also a re-enactment of the assassination of the traitor King Lang Darma of Tibet by a Buddhist monk during the mid 9th century.
