Cocoon auction market organized in Ang district
Anantnag, September 01, (Scoop News)- Cocoon auction market has been organized at Sarnal Anantnag to facilitate open auction cocoon produced by the farmers of Anantnag and Kulgam districts. The Sericulture department has already created a proper marketing infrastructure by way of construction of modern cocoon auction market with all the required facilities for open auction of cocoons, storage and residential facilities for outside and local buyers to infuse proper competition during the process of auctioning so that farmers get remunerative price for the their procedure.
During the current year, it is estimated that 80 metric tons of cocoons will be transacted in the market generating an income of Rs. 1.50 crore. The department has made elaborate arrangements to facilitate timely payment of the cocoon to the farmers through private buyers. For local buyers, the department has kept cocoon bank facility readily available to them for purchase of cocoons.
During current year, the price of cocoons for ‘’A’’ grade cocoons have touched Rs. 850/- Kilogram while ‘’B’’ and ‘’C’’ grades are fetching slightly less rates which is due to decline in the raw silk prices both at the national and international markets.
With the concrete efforts of the Sericulture department and implementation of various centrally sponsored schemes, sericulture is becoming a viable and profitable enterprise attracting more and more people especially youth towards this sector.
