| JK Congress : All eyes on GN Azad | |

Shattered with the recent worst ever debacle in parliamentary elections in India, the Jammu and Kashmir Congress men are looking only towards former Chief Minister and union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to sail the sinking ship. And it seems to be the only option with Congress that he can drag this ship safely to the coast if not up to the harbor at least.
A senior Congress leader told this journalist that though he does not belong to Azad faction, but “ it is fact that only Ghulam Nabi Azad can safely sail the sinking ship of Congress in the present situation”, saying that despite being power in the past six years they (Congress men) have nothing to propagate among the masses . “ Neither we have good governance record nor anything else to offer”, he said adding that even Congress has no proper slogan or issue to contest the coming assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir. The only option with the Congress is, he said, the two and half years tenure of Ghulam Nabi Azad he served as chief minister to exploit among the masses . He said, the two years tenure of GN Azad as JK Chief Minister from 2006 to 2008 is still being considered as best governance period of the state particularly on the developmental front . “ So we can convince the masses if he leads the party in the coming assembly elections but it will work only if he is declared a chief- ministerial candidate of the party”, he said .
It is not only the Congress leader who thinks so, even the majority of surveys conducted by various people on social media like ‘Face book’ and other platforms, the people favored Ghulam Nabi Azad as their first choice as next JK chief minister and Mufti Muhammad Sayed emerged as second choice . However, Congress party was no where in the surveys but Mufti’s PDP emerged as first choice of the people . In these surveys, it emerged that despite the people being annoyed with Congress party, they still have all and high regards for Ghulam Nabi Azad as a person .
It is interesting to mention here that Congress has no proper slogan to contest the coming assembly elections in the state. For instance, the ruling National Conference is likely to rake up the issue of article 370 of Indian constitution regarding Jammu Kashmir , it can rake up the special status of the state. Even it can go to the extent of plebiscite . Similarly, PDP raises the issue the human rights violations, cross border talks, self rule and good governance. And BJP has clear agenda to communalize the situation and seek votes on communal agenda . However, Congress seems to be completely confused to Contest the elections in sensitive Jammu and Kashmir state by adopting a clear position . Now it has only option to contest these elections in the name of “good governance” , but its past six years record and performance in Jammu Kashmir, has nothing to offer in the name of governance .Even Congress leaders in the state of Jammu and Kashmir can not speak a single word against corruption as most of the corruption allegations leveled in the past six years were against the Congress ministers in the state . In such a situation, Congress has only option to sell the name of Ghulam Nabi Azad in the masses . He is the only person having clean image in politics. Not only at state level, even Azad is an honest name at national politics of India as well . Moreover, his two years tenure as Jammu Kashmir chief minister and his contribution in the health sector of Jammu and Kashmir has left a great impact among the masses . It is common belief that if he leads the party in the present situation, he can save the ship.
