Peerzada takes review of Floriculture Deptt
Srinagar, July 22, (Scoop News)-The Department of Floriculture has realized an amount of about Rs.100 crore through the marketing of floriculture products and recreational facilities in the state during the last fiscal.
This was revealed in a meeting of officers convened under the chairmanship of Minister for Floriculture, Hajj, Auqaf and Public Enterprises, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, to review the functioning of the Department here today.
Addressing the meeting, the Minister highlighted the importance of floriculture industry. He said that floriculture is a hundred crore industry which is fast growing and has achieved tremendous growth during the past several decades and has extended its ambit worldwide. He said that the State has ample floriculture potential and the need is to fully utilise and exploit it on scientific lines.
Referring to commercial floriculture, the Minister said that it has emerged as a high-tech activity taking place even under unfavourable climatic conditions by utilising controlled conditions in green houses.
Reviewing the pace of progress, the Minister stressed for timely completion of all on-going works being executed under the floriculture sector. He directed the concerned for mobilizing men and machinery of the department at District level for supervising, monitoring the maintenance of parks, besides sensitizing the youth by organizing awareness camps and workshops regarding the benefits and facilities being provided to the growers under the sector.
Directing the concerned for organizing Flower Mela on Eid, setting-up of kiosks at significant points in the city for sale of loose and cut flowers, the Minister said that it would go a long way in popularizing the activities of the department, generate employment avenues, besides improve financial health of the department. He said that the activities of the department should not be restricted only to maintenance and development of parks and gardens, adding that now this sector has assumed greater significance due to its greater employment and income generation potential as flowers have great demand on every occasion in the country and world.
The Meeting was informed that 608 hectares of land was covered under floriculture on which a total production of 1.5 lakh quintals of Marigold, Gladiolus, Tuberose and Lillium was registered during last year in Jammu Division. An amount of Rs. 78.42 lakh was realized against the set target of Rs. 82.30 lakh during last financial year.
A total of 1900 growers were provided subsidy to the tune of Rs. 1.29 crore. Out of 81 on-going works, 30 stands completed in the Division and 37 new works of Rs. 70 lakh would be taken up this year for which an amount of Rs. 27 lakh has been earmarked, the meeting was informed.
The meeting was informed that an amount of Rs. 5.50 crore was realized against the set target of Rs. 5.33 crore during the last year, while as an amount of Rs. 2.21 crore has been earned up to ending June this year in Kashmir Division. The meeting was informed that an area of 96.79 hectares were under floriculture with the production of around 232.45 tons as loose and 115.51 lakh as cut flowers in private sector during last year in the Division.
The department has established 89 poly green houses, 28 shade houses and 3 fan and pad units under protected cultivation in private sector with the assistance of Rs. 94.23 lakh during last year under various Centrally Sponsored Schemes. A cumulative amount to the tune of Rs. 28 lakh was provided as assistance to progressive growers for quality plant material, installation of tube wells and establishment of 3 nurseries under private sector, the meeting was informed.
The meeting further informed that one flower mandi has been established at Raj Bagh to facilitate the stakeholders. The department has been providing refrigeration facilities to the commercial flower growers to store their produce temporarily with refrigerator vans in various districts for marketing.
Commissioner Secretary, Floriculture, Sanjeev Kumar Verma, Directors Floriculture Kashmir and Jammu Divisions Sunil Misri and K K Sharma, besides other senior officers of the department attended the meeting.
