Vishav Sathali: (Basholi) the land of natural beauty and heritage

Jammu and Kashmir has immense importance in its natural beauty all over the world, every part of the State is blessed with natural beauty and heritage. The rivers, flora and funa, historical and religious places of the state makes it more beautiful. The land mark in the natural beauty is the ancient place called Vishav Sathali presently known as Basholi is just 165 km from Jammu city, the town is situated on the bank of river Ravi and artificial Lake called Ranjeet Sagar. The town is gate way to Himachal and Punjab States and J&K State is going to be contacted with these states in coming future by construction of new bridge over the Ravi river at Basholi.

According to historical story, Basholi was established by King Bhupat Pal 1635 A.D. on the Bank of river Ravi, which was later shifted to upper ridges. The King had constructed two historical Forts one is in the middle of the town and another was constructed over the hill 3 Km. away from the town. It is pertinent to mention here that both the Forts are situated on the top of two Hills and one can enjoy the scenic beauty of the town from the Forts situated over the hills, the construction of artificial lake of Ranjeet Sagar Dam has added a feather in the beauty of town, due to the construction of Dam an artificial Lake has been created along the Bank of the River Ravi and Island has been emerged in this Lake. These Islands attract the tourists in the town and Kali Mata Temple in the middle of one of the Island is a great source of attraction to the tourists of the town.


One can easily access to this town by Lakhanpur or Billawar, the road is mettled and but there is need for further improvement of the road, so that more tourists can be attracted in the town.



Basholi is mother land of great Scholars of Sanskrit and authorities of Sanskrit like Acharya Pandit Chura Mani and Dr. Utam Chand Sastri Pathak are the prominent amongst them, the famous Chura Mani Sanskrit Vidyalya is also flourishing in the town.


Basholi Paintings which are prepared with the work of Gold have its own place in the painting world, Ram Leela of the Basholi is also famous in the world, it is dramatized herewith great pomp and show.


Shiv Tempe of Basholi has great religious importance and it is connected with the Maha Bharata, the pond in front of the Shiv Temple always remained filled with Lotus flowers.



The Forts constructed by King Bhupat Pal are in deteriorated conditions due to the lack of management by the Government, the temple called Chanchloi Mata is constructed in old Fort 3 Km away from the town. There is an interesting story with regard to the establishment of the temple. “It is common tale in the town that during the regime of King Bhupat Pal, a young girl namely Chanchalo Devi fall in love with the son of the king and she wanted to married to the son of the King and the Prince was also in love with the young girl. The girl was poor and lower status in the society, so the king refused to accept her as daughter-in-law but the girl was so adamant she wanted to do anything in order to prove her love.



The king put forth the condition to a young girl that if she would cross a distance from one Fort to another Fort on rope the king would accept her as daughter-in-law the young girl has accepted the offer and on fateful day she started her journey on rope which was tied from one fort to another and both forts were situated on two different hills, due to her strong will and determination, the girl managed to cross the half of the way on the rope without taking any support, when she was near her destination the king had cut the rope with his sharp sword and consequently young fall into deep gorge and died on the spot. The king had committed great sin and consequence thereof the soul of the young girl started wandering in the Forts and the family of the King faced lot of hardship and downfall, thereafter king met with Saint who told the king that he should construct temple in the memory of young girl and king had constructed a beautiful temple in the fort which is 3 Km. away from the town. The idol of Bhagwati Mata and Mohra of Chanchlo Devi are worshiped herein the temple, temple is managed and looked after by the Padha (Upadya) family and it is surrounded by natural beauty. There is need to maintain conservancy of the fort, which is in deteriorated condition for this purpose assistance from the state government are required.
