PDP is a party with difference: Mehbooba
Srinagar, May 18 (Scoop News) –Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has said the Peoples Democratic Party has established its credentials as a party with a difference which has clear political and development agenda.
Addressing a workers convention of Anantnag Constituency at Dak Banglow Khanabal today she said during its short stint in power the party gave a new directions to both politics and development in the state and promoted competition between political parties as a result of which the people can now make the right choice after considering the performance of each of them. Senior party leader and General Secretary Mohammed Dilawar Mir, Deputy Speaker Mohammed Sartaj Madni, District President Peer Mohd Hussain, MLA Ab Rehman Veeri, MLA Mohd Rafi Mir, Nizamudin Khatana, Ab Rahim Rather, Adv JavaidAh Sheikh, Adv Javaid Sathoo, Gh Ahmad Thokar, Youth state secretary Imran Amin , youth leader Tariq Ah and others were also present on this occasion and spoke to the convention.

Mehbooba said while on the larger political front the government led by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed achieved unprecedented success in dismentaling state repression and restoring the dignity and self respect of every citizen, it also created an atmosphere conducive to historic initiatives across the LoC. She said Mufti Saheb had inherited a tightly controlled situation in which life, property and honour of people was in danger and within days of his government a relief and relaxation was felt.

Expressing the determination of her party to build on the initiatives taken previously by it Mehbooba said the trans LoC trade and travel will be taken to the next level so that a true and real Free Economic Zone (FEZ) is established. This she said would help generate thousands of jobs in industrial , tourism and trading sectors and J&K could become the hub of a new economic activity which would also lead to resolution of political problems facing the state.

She said it was unfortunate that the steps taken in 2005 for introducing the bus service and trade across LoC had not been followed up properly with the result that perishable items like apples worth crores are reportedly rotting at Salamabad Uri. Had the early momentum been maintained in the process, by now people on either side of LoC should have been able to travel in their personal cars and trading would have become a major source of economic regeneration.
Refering to the development issues Mehbooba said PDP would carry forward its agenda of equitable and balanced growth irrespective of political affiliation of any region, area or constituency.
he said Anantnag was a classic example of how the PDP treated all areas by same standards as it started mega projects in Anantnag inspite of the fact that it was then represented by an opposition MLA. Even though NC had been enjoying a monopoly in this important district head quarter segment it was only when PDP came to power that major projects like the University campus, introduction of Post graduate classes in government degree college, 300 bedded hospital, Khanabal Pahalgam road, shopping complex and Bus stand were taken in hand. She regretted that with the change of government the NC had resorted to its trade mark apartheid against this important and historic town and had shelved all those projects. She said the PDP would surely add a medical college to the 300 bedded hospital in view of the needs of the people of south Kashmir and would take up similar projects else where in the state as well. She said modern subjects with employability potential will be added to the university and the colleges as was the original objective behind their establishment.
Mehbooba said the multi crore sewerage and drainage projects for the town proposed under the JNNURM will be revived so that civic amenities for the fast expanding town are upgraded. The traffic congestion at the Khanabal crossing remains unaddressed and PDP is committed to construct adequate flyovers to over come the traffic problems that are making movement in the area impossible.
Mehbooba said in view of the historic importance of Anantnag town and its location at the centre of the busiest tourist circuit of the state the government should have carried forward work on roads, electricity, water and sewerage on a priority basis there but like elsewhere in the state the development process has come to a stand still in this area also. She said people of the state are missing the good governance provided by the earlier PDP led coalition and now realize that a wise and well considered use of vote alone can change the destiny of the state and its development scenario.

Speaking on this occasion party General Secretary Mohammed Dilawar Mir said entire Jammu & Kashmir appreciates the pioneering contribution of south Kashmir in providing the initial strength of PDP. It was because of the major contribution of south Kashmir that PDP could get an opportunity to serve the state and make governance look positive and accountable to people, he said.

Mir said but now the situation has changed and PDP is being acknowledged as the formost political force in the state and people from all regions are looking upto it for bringing the state out of its problems. He said even if the north Kashmir is having an army of ministers in the government but they have not been able to make any difference to the lives of people in their own constituencies or elsewhere. He said PDP is spreading fast and the youth are especially finding it as an attractive plateform to shape the future of the state in a way that the people living here taste the fruits of democracy and development.
