Legendary Dogri folk singer Ghulam Mohd.passed away
‘Jotaan Jaagdiyan’ voice is no more
Jammu, January 27(Scoop News) –The legendary folk singer and Sanget Natak Akademi Awardee Ghulam Mohd passed away today in Jammu. He was 84. Ghulam Mohd is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters.
He had come from the family of narrative singers who preserved disseminated the folk ballads since centuries including that of Shree Mata Vaishno Devi.

Eminent Sitar Maestro O.N Raina has condoled the demise of noted Dogri folk singer, Ghulam Mohammad, who passed away today.He termed Ghulam Mohd a symbol of the secular traditions of arts.

Shri Raina said the most noteworthy feature of the singing style of Ghulam Mohd was it’s effective narrations which need not to be supported by any visuals as the singing is so powerful that it creates the whole imagery of the narratives. The other magical effect was The power of his singing style which engrosses the audience and engages them mentally and spiritually at times. For most of the audiences who were youngsters was a life-time opportunity to witness a living museum of the traditional singing.



Secretary J&K Academy of Art, Culture & Languages, Khalid Bashir Ahmad, has condoled the demise of noted Dogri folk singer, Ghulam Mohammad.

In a condolence message, Khalid said that in the death of Ghulam Mohammad, Jammu & Kashmir has lost an outstanding performing artist and the Dogri music one of its iconic singers. He said his contribution to the Dogri folk and devotional music was immense and would be remembered for a long time to come.
Khalid recalled the departed singer’s long association with the J&K Academy of Art, Culture & Literature and said that the institution would always cherish this. The deceased, he said, was a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademy Award and the State Award, besides being member of the Academy’s advisory committee on folk music. The Secretary on behalf of the Academy and on his own behalf conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.

Devender Singh Rana, Provincial President J&K National Conference, Jammu province has also condoled the sad demise of Haji Ghulam Mohammad an eminent Dogri singer.

In his condolence message, Rana said Haji Ghulam Mohammad was a connoisseur of devotional songs (Bhakan) of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji and a symbol of secular tradition of Jammu And Kashmir State. He said with his death an era of spiritual dogri music has come to an end.

Rana prayed to Almighty to bless his soul and hoped that his followers will be able to continue with the tradition.
