Dr Babar Afzal conferred with “The Champion of the Earth Award”

Chandigarh ,January 17 (Scoop News)-Dr. Babar, who is formally and informally quoted as, ‘The Most Credible Man on Pashmina in the World’, was picked up to be conferred with the prestigious award at the International Education Symposium and Awards. His selfless decade long work to highlight complex issues concerning pashmina eco-system which include, climate change leading to the displacement of nomadic and weaver communities, preserving the diminishing species, the delicate pashmina goats, fight against exploitation by traders and middle-men, demoralisation and depression among artisans, introduction of healthcare and education in the community and building a technology of trust for the consumers of pashmina around the world, was chosen to be decorated with this award.
In the interaction, Dr. Babar stated that there are multiple threats facing people and planet. Climate change is eating into our well-being, economic development, peace and stability, and unfortunately unless we take individual and collective action, it will only get worse. In converting land for agriculture, infrastructure and urban expansion, we have destroyed ecosystems, biodiversity and the services they provide. We are polluting the land, air and sea, causing millions of deaths each year, burdening healthcare systems and, again, destroying nature’s foundations. But, in reality, though, there is only one threat: humanity. Our reliance on fossil fuels, our pursuit of unrestrained growth, our prioritization of the short-term over the long has caused these challenges. We have become our own worst enemy. And there has to be Science-Based Pathways for Sustainability aimed to promote integrated and forward-looking approaches to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. It is time that Indian Businesses lead the global action on sustainability. And for that, we need unprecedented collaboration and action between businesses, investors and governments. Dr. Babar strongly mentioned that India, home to one-sixth of all humanity, holds the key to the success of the UNSDG 2030 Agenda.
Babar is a techie, a shepherd and a sustainability crusader and his ground work has won him huge international credibility including National and International Awards, like the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award, Dr BR Ambedkar, Shri. Rabindranath Tagore Award, Promising Indian Award, The Karmaveer Chakra (UN) Silver and Bronze, The Bharat Gaurav Award, Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Changemaker of the Year Award, Honoris Causa etc. He is amongst the very few who have been profiled by the BBC, TIME Magazine (Genius Issue), CNN and Bloomberg Global etc.

The prestigious award was conferred by Smartcircuits in Chandigarh, and it’s Founder, Mr. Sourabh Kaushal stated that in this pandemic they are providing experiential learning STEM kits to students (through their business partners) so that they can self learn at home which is the need of the hour. The event had profiled guests like Deepak Singh, DSP, Bureau of Investigation, Punjab, (Chief Guest), Mr George Salazar from NASA Johnson Space Center (Guest of Honor), Mr Troy D. Cline, Director, NASA STEAM Innovation Lab, USA, Mr. Edward Godward, NASA, Dr. Isabel Pedraza, CERN, USA, Kathy Ho, National Geographic Explorer, USA.
