Srinagar,March 09 (Scoop News)- International women’s Day celebrations continued at Women’s Studies Centre University of Kashmir today where it was resolved that KU is going to conduct skill development programme for adolescent girls
Screening and counselling for the proposed course was done today was done today where faculty from Women’s study centre interacted with the students.
Earlier on Monday Experts called for increased awareness among women regarding their health rights and care.
“There is a lot of ignorance among women about their health related issues or the facilities that are available for them with regard to their healthcare,” said Dr Abdul Hamid Zargar, Director, Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura. .
He was speaking at the one-day seminar on “Women’s health rights and care” organized jointly by Kashmir University’s Department of Students Welfare and Women’s Study Centre. The seminar, sponsored by Srinagar supplement of the Times of India, Srinagar Plus, was organized to mark the International Women’s Day on March 8.
“Infertility is a major socio-psychological issue. There are health problems among women due to changing life styles, leading to diseases like obesity and diabetes among them,” Dr Zargar, the guest of honour, said in his key note address. .
The seminar was presided over by the Dean, Academic Affairs, Prof A R Yousuf in the capacity of the University’s acting vice-chancellor. He dwelt at length about the women’s rights in Islam, referring to different Qur’anic verses and Hadiths.
The Chief Guest on the occasion was Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Naseema Lankar. “I am addressing from this platform after 30 years. I congratulate Kashmir University for taking up the initiative of holding this seminar on a vital theme. Women need to be educated about their rights. They have a lot of potential to excel in different fields,” Lankar said, adding the administration, academics and health experts should join hands to address women’s health related issues.
The KU Registrar, Prof S Fayyaz Ahmad, thanked the divisional administration for lending support to the Kashmir University in developing the Chinar Heritage Park. He sought more help from the divisional administration in its endeavours. He said KU is making all efforts to create a gender friendly atmosphere at the campus.
The Dean, Students Welfare, Prof Neelofar Khan, highlighted the aims and objectives of the Seminar. “We need adequate health facilities. At the grassroots level, women are not aware of their rights. We need to have collective efforts at the university and healthcare levels to address the women’s issues,” she said. Showkat Shafi Asstt. Dean Student’s welfare presented vote of thanks and Shaheen Kant literary officer conducted the proceedings.
The function was attended by senior KU officials, academics besides a large chunk of students. Seven presentations were read on the second and third sessions of the seminar.
